We recently connected with Tess Myers and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tess thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Humm, this question is a little harder to answer then one would think. I have always loved making or creating things that others would love or that made them laugh. When I first started embroidering and giving things as gifts, I saw how happy it made them. I also found it was not as hard to learn as I thought. I did not take classes or have a teacher. I learned by making mistakes and figuring out how to correct them. Ok, I take that back about classes or teachers. I started taking online classes at YouTube University. I was able to drive my school bus during the morning and afternoons and take a class between. I learned by watching, doing and finding my own way of doing things. I have always been a crafty person. I love taking ideas from here and there and creating my own items. Watching others laugh is what really helped me keep going. I’ll admit, it was not the easiest to get started. I found a used embroidery machine at a sewing center and put it on layaway. I worked all summer to be able to afford that machine. But it was sure worth it! I had the most fun with that machine. Soon I was attending Holiday events. My dream of owning my own little shop stayed in the back of my mind. A hopeful dream but only a dream. But if you take all those words you hear from others, ” it’s to hard to own your own business “, ” you can dream it but it won’t happen”, and so many other words. Turn those words into ambition! I decided to work hard towards making that dream come true. With the help of family and friends, I DID IT! The most rewarding thing for me is to hear the laughter from those that enter my sew stinkin cute shop. I use to have customers ask if I could do this or that and I would freeze with terroir thinking no way. But now, it’s such a fun challenge, My answer is ALWAYS, “I’m sure I can”. I really hope this story will encourage someone out there who has always wanted to try something new in their life but was to afraid, not enough money or just no encouraging friends or family. YOU CAN DO IT, one step, one day at a time.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to give other’s something unique. Bring a smile to their faces. Create something for a special occasion.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
If you struggle, find teachers on YouTube. They can be very encouraging and helpful
