We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tess Foran a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tess, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I remember the first time I used a tattoo machine. My friend had gotten one from his artist Chris Holtsapple and we were passing around a pumpkin and tattooing little doodles on it. It’s what first sparked my interest in becoming a tattoo artist and I don’t know if I would be here today if it weren’t for that experience.

Tess, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been interested in art from a young age and began tattooing about two years ago and have since fallen in love with the art form. I tattoo at Big Time Customz and specialize in illustrative pieces emphasizing linework and bold colors and designs. I love working with clients to bring their ideas to life and give them pieces that bring them joy.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think we need to do more to support local artists and their journey. There are lots of small contributions that can be made like buying prints going to see local musicians perform etc.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think the original sentiment of giving Artist more control over their body of work was noble however much of it seems to have devolved into Ponzi schemes where many people have ended up losing a lot of money.
