Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tess Clare. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Tess thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Overall, I’m happy as an artist because it’s not just a job or a passion to me at this point but a part of my identity. Since I’m not a full-time musician yet, I still have a regular job as a barista. Although it’s pretty laidback and allows me the flexibility for being creative, I do often ponder what it would be like to have a job that stimulates and fulfills me more but also allows me to pursue my ambitions as an artist. I have these thoughts on a regular basis and continue being open to whatever will make me happy and always creative.

Tess, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an indie pop singer-songwriter (I write music primarily for myself but also for other artists.) My music tends to be about personal experiences and translating those raw emotions into something powerful. I’m most proud of my live shows because one of my favorite things is performing and getting to play live with my band. It’s just so fun and freeing, and the show is full of so much energy, despite not having enough space on our small stages – haha. I’m incredibly excited about the music yet to come, the unreleased songs I’ve been sitting on, that I’m dying to have heard.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to take a situation in my life or a feeling, often one that makes me feel powerless, and turn that into this tangible, beautiful weapon of a song that I can always have and that others who listen and relate can also have, to help them feel less alone. It’s an incredible connection, when someone says one of my songs really got to them.
In your view, what can society do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best way to support artists is to go see them live! There’s nothing better than the energy of people all coming together in a room and watching someone not literally, but kinda, bearing their soul out to everyone. It’s truly a magical experience as the artist, and I also love this as a fan, too. With streaming, it’s so hard for artists to make a living off their music, so supporting them live and buying merch are some great ways to directly support artists and to help them to keep making music.
