We recently connected with Terrysha Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Terrysha , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
On May 31st 2020, when I soft launched my cosmetic brand Ryshaa Skin, the lack of certainty on whether it would be a success or failure was constantly on the mind. As summer later approached in Barbados my business started to thrived as the sales skyrocketed overnight. What first started out as a small business with only hair growth oils turned into a product line with over 20 various skincare products.
The mission was to project a product that helps with people who struggle with hair loss, damaged and brittle hair. In the past I had problems finding a product to grow and treat my hair, the constant stress and anxiety I’ve had when my hair couldn’t fit in a one or be braided how i wanted it to was devastating.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Being located in my home country Barbados, it took 1 year of researching and building the brand image I had envisioned to come to life. At the age of 18 I had started Ryshaa Skin locally in Barbados, My Mariposa hair growth oil had became a fan favorite one month after it hit the marketplace, my phone was steadily receiving reviews of how fast and effective the Mariposa hair oil has been and before I knew it, the customers started begging for a restock day.
Over the next few months, the effectiveness of my hair growth oil was spread out against the parishes in my country and with the request to add more products to my business. In December, a product line of various body scrubs, body lotions/butters, lip scrubs/lip glosses was added just in time to catch the holiday season wave. After achieving the near impossible ambitious goal I was proud and happy with the success rate and decided that was just the beginning of my business.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
From the very beginning, it was important to me to have a successful small business. However coming from a fortunate family doesn’t exactly means you’ll get everything handed to you, my family doubting and rejecting to support my business ideas was a dose of cold water to the face. Thankfully, I was blessed with angel friends. My first year of business was funded and managed by my friends/homies. From deliveries, to popup shops, to broadcasting they did it all, I created a business plan and portfolio and presented the idea to my friends who approved eagerly to see what it would come of. And little did they know it paid off.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons i had to unlearn in the business sector is that not everyone is going to support you, purchase from you, stand by you, or even like you. Sometimes people has many faces and you don’t realize until it’s to late.
Early 2021, I’ve noticed some of my female friends started to be seething with envy and jealousy. It was a very sad time, seeing someone you have so much love for turning against you because you want better in life, because you chose to do better in life is agonizing.
