We recently connected with Terryl Scholl and have shared our conversation below.
Terryl, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Drive and belief in yourself. At the end of the day you can read every book and watch every video labeled “How to start a business”, but when it comes down to it, the only thing holding you back from personal success is yourself. It takes time, discipline (which we all lack at times), and like mentioned above, drive. Where do you want to be in 5 years? What can you do today to strive towards getting better yourself? Who cares what you did yesterday, its gone.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After going to school for Architectural Drafting and Design, I found a job a Residential Drafter / Designer for a firm in Rochester, MN. Here I learned the ins and outs of what makes a home a home. After a few years, I decided having a boss was not for me, though he was a great one.
I took the leap and quit my 9-5 to bet on myself. I saw issues in the design and build industry of future homeowners not being 100% satisfied with their million dollar investments, which did not make sense to me.
After starting True Rendering, I knew we could do more. I started to focus on assisting people by listening to their wants and needs, not just doing what I was told to. This has set us apart in the industry of Architectural Visualization in many ways. Not only do we love helping out each customer, but love to build relationships all over the industry.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Simple enough it is a satisfied customer. Word of mouth is the ultimate “strategy” we have for growing clientele! Sure marketing has its days, but at the end of the day if we can assist a customer exactly the way we say we can, why would they not refer us?
Sticking to our word and not leaving until the project is complete is something I will always stand by, no matter the circumstance.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I was our main 3D Designer at the company I worked for prior to leaving, and never found doing that work as “work”. It is like a video game. I find myself taking on too much work myself and not delegating because I enjoy some of the work so much.
I can not count how many projects I did for fun or for free for the first 6 months of being on my own to build relationships to get us where we are today.
