We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terrye Morgan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Terrye, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
In 2018, I traveled to Chennai, India for an educational trip to study the art of “The Beautiful State” which is the practice of being present and living in a peaceful beautiful state at the O & O Academy. This trip was the defining moment which led me back to practice the art of braiding again. And, Ultimately the driving factor in the creation of hairmuse. At the Academy, I was taken through a series of meditation workshops. During one of the workshops, I was asked to think of something I enjoyed doing that I no longer do as often. It was easy for me to identify braiding. Upon my return to the US, I started braiding again.
My Panamanian – Costa Rican / Jamaican roots has exposed me to all kinds of cultural expression. I choose to express my creativity through braiding. Growing up, my mother cared deeply about establishing a healthy hair care routine for my sister and I. Saturday was wash day, Sunday my hair was carefully combed in medium twists for church and Sunday evening my hair was braided for the school week. This weekly routine was on repeat for years. I loved this mommy – daughter bonding time and loved every cornrowed style which was a true expression of love.
Naturally, by age 13 I was braiding my own hair and anyone who would let me braid theirs. My mother was my first Muse. I would wash and roller set her hair and this became a very important part of self-care. This hair time was sacred, meditative, intentional and purposeful. Her long, thick tresses were hair goals personified!
After the pandemic, I started taking clients who I refer to as my Muses. I became a licensed natural hair stylist and I’m also a licensed teacher. I have married my love of education and hair care. Every Muse is special to me. Healthy hair education, light-weight / tension-free braid styles and classes are offered at hairmuse. It’s not just braiding hair. It is an experience, a sacred time that’s intentional and purposeful. My Muses are loved and taken care of. The hairmuse brand is authentic and unique because it reflects each individual Muses vision and unique style. It’s very common to see many variations of the traditional box braid style as every Muse has their own preference which is carefully brought to life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My business is hairmuse. Education, natural hair care, braiding, and protective styling services are offered. I’m a licensed Natural Hair / Braid Stylist and Educator. My Muses and Mini Muses call me “Tee”. I’m a self taught braider and I also studied at the Magic Fingers Natural Hair Institute in Queens, NY where I acquired my Natural Hair License. Hair braiding is one of the ways I practice self-care as it is very meditative and relaxing. It is also a creative expression of love.
What sets us a part from other natural hair care / braiding services? The experience, a deep concern about each individuals hair journey and vision. We are not a one size fits all, and we are not apart of the rush culture. Self-care is highly thought about before and during the braid service. From the initial consultation call until the completion of the hair service, the client comes first. The art of braiding is a very intimate and personal service. Consider the energy that is being transferred from the braider to client and client to braider. Each Muse experience is exceptional because it is understood that the service is a sacred and peaceful time set aside for self care.
I am most proud of my Muse community. My village of beautiful Muses is filled with the most inspiring, talented, creative, spiritual, uplifting, kind, and thoughtful people. The hairmuse community has an unmatched energy. Everyone involved is magnetic and special. This Muse community can not be easily duplicated and has been cultivated over the past four years. It’s a special place where love and respect reside. This energy lends itself to creativity which helps to focus on each individual Muse look. The hairmuse community represents education, healthy hair goals, lightweight – tension free braids, protective styling and all the pride that’s attached to it.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele would be the consultation call. The consultation call is the first impression. We are choosing each other or not! Energy is real. During the call you can feel if the client – stylist will be a good fit. Spending the time answering questions and explaining about the service is extremely important. First time Muses must have a consultation call before a braid service appointment is confirmed. Most clients appreciate the initial consultation call and they feel very comfortable when they arrive for their first appointment. Listening to the client and being honest about the service helps the client to be seen and heard.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The hairmuse reputation has been built on high quality client service and satisfaction. My Muses are respected, heard, and seen. Clients have posted about their experience on social media. Also, potential Muses have found hairmuse via social media searches. Hairmuse has also grown organically by word of mouth.
