We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terry Tyler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Terry, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Something no one tells you is that you have to fund yourself when you’re starting out.
I had to sell my car in the university to be able to afford to travel overseas for the first time to kickstart my modelling career.
Yeah,
I think it’s worth it to take a risk. The whole time I left home and my family behind to figure out a career I knew nothing about and I had to carve a path for myself, In the beginning, you know it’s kind of scary, but at the end of the day, all we have is hope and we are just hoping that it works out one day because you hear a about lot of people who started and didn’t really end too well. All you need to do is keep an open mind, practice practice, consistency and slowly, but it takes some a few years but will finally start to pay off, you know. For some people, it might take less time, for some it might take two years. I guess mine took about seven years, but then that’s fine because I’m finally at a stage where I can be proud of myself and sit back and smile and say I made the right move. it’s the most fulfilling thing ever.

Terry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a versatile fashion model, originally from Ghana. I had dreams of becoming a professional basketball player growing up but I found myself getting drawn into the fashion industry which I love and learn so much from everyday.
I moved to Capetown, South Africa to build my book with my mother agency Twenty Model Management.
I have done ads for Benetton F/W, Diesel Fragrance and Lookbooks for Emporio Armani.
Now I’ve finally been placed in New York City with VNY Models where I now work with brands like Ralph Lauren, Paul Stuart and Calvin Klein.
I get inspired every singe day I am on set seeing how much skill and effort the teams put in to make a vision come to live.
I try to be as kind as possible and build genuine connections while working. I think I’m full of good vibes, so its easy.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When my family tells me they proud of me and also most importantly freedom.
The Freedom to be who ever you want to be and where ever you want to be That fact that I don’t live by a traditional 9 – 5 schedule gives me the creative freedom and the time to invest in my craft.
I also love the part where I get to travel around the world.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yess Definitely,
Rich Dad Poor Dad was the first book I completed and it has a lot to do with my thought process.
The Secret, The Power Of Now, The Alchemist and The 48 Laws of Power
I also surround myself with inspirational people and friends that share useful knowledge with me.
