We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terry Golden. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terry below.
Alright, Terry thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was moving to ATL Georgia. I moved from chicago at 21 years old without the proper finances, without a place to stay, and without family. All I knew was that cosmetology school started the day after I planned to move here. Almost 3 years later I’ve graduated, I have my own place, a great career in cosmetology and am pursuing my artistry. There has been a lot of trial and tribulation to get to this point and there will be more to get to the next point, but I am so proud of where I am and where I’m going!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started doing hair at about 13 years old when my mom told me she’d no longer be doing my hair because I “didn’t know how to keep my hands out of it.” From then on I started to experiment with my own hair which led to me doing my cousins hair. Then at 16 years old I started doing friends at schools hair, their parents, and even people in the neighborhood. I was very self sufficient at an early age and this just added on to it. Fast forward…I’ve gone to school and have been working my magic for years now. My brand is called GoldenCrownCollection LLC. Furthermore, I am an artist. I sing, rap, and draw. I grew up singing, leading in the church choir, president of choir in high school and even did many talent shows and a pageant. I also always knew how to rap and draw. I went to art school during my middle school years to sharpen some of the skills I already possessed.
During the later years of high school and a bit of college I stopped expressing my artistic side as much but now since I’ve moved to ATL I’ve been in the studio, performing, and getting great opportunities to push my music.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth is the best source of clientele for me. When I do someone’s hair they leave my chair feeling beautiful and when people ask the Golden question “who did your hair” that’s where it all starts! I have very loyal clients that support and promote me any chance they get!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Today social media has a huge impact on how much a business thrives and it can be difficult because I didn’t know that being a hairstylist (or an artist) you also had to be a content creator. I have a great following on TikTok, 27.6k, and being authentic is what got me there. I feel like on social media some feel like they need to put on a persona; not realizing how much people appreciate authenticity. So that’s my advice: be you and show what you can do!
