We were lucky to catch up with Terry Everett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Terry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
There was a moment in time where there was a patient with an extremely long problem list and no other students wanted to interview him. He was homeless and had a history of drug use so many people thought that he would be difficult talk to. A resident walked in and tried speaking with the patient and was dismissed. I walked in and had a great conversation with the patient. We were laughing and shared stories about our hometowns. This was the moment for me where I realized that my unique background allowed me to connect with people that a lot of people in the field can not see on a different level.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
It started in high school when my twin brother and I would make videos to be funny. Freshman year we made a video at VCU about black excellence and it went viral in a matter of days. Since then we have been traveling, making rap videos, and finding different mediums to motivate the youth who may not be in the best environments. We created the organization B the Movement as a way to inspire the underrepresented youth.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Find a niche and get really good at it. With social media we are overwhelmed with new ideas every day. While many of them may be great, they can interfere with the discipline to stay focused on one task. If you can build a personal statement around yourself then you know what does and does not fit into those parameters. Do the things that make you feel good and that will take you a long way.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
In medicine in particular, it is about endurance. They often say the brightest flame burns the fastest and that is definitely seen in the medical field. You definitely can be studying more, you can always be reading more, you can always be working on that business more, but it is the balance that will allow you to continue in the long run. In this day in age a lot of people are focused on pushing through and persevering which is great, however you need to know what limitations you have to slowly push those limits. Success it not one thing; not money, cars, possession, or any specific thing. Success is peace, wealth, self appreciation, and the ability to look in the mirror to say that you are proud of yourself.
