Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Terrina Taylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Terrina, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
Let’s better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career by integrating comprehensive financial education into the curriculum from an early age. Financial literacy is a crucial life skill that is often overlooked in traditional schooling, yet it plays a fundamental role in shaping individuals’ futures.
My own journey highlights the importance of early financial education. Growing up, financial topics were rarely discussed at home, (other than the lack of funds), and definitely not in school. It wasn’t until recently, in 2021, that I opened my first Individual Retirement Account (IRA). This delay in understanding a basic financial concepts like retirement planning had a significant impact on my financial journey and could have been mitigated with earlier education.
Imagine if I had learned about the importance of saving for retirement and the power of compound interest during my formative years. I could have started investing in my IRA much earlier, giving my money more time to grow and secure my future retirement.
This experience underscores why our communities need basic financial education at an earlier age. By teaching financial literacy in schools, we can empower the next generation with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the complex financial game confidently. Early exposure to financial concepts can instill healthy financial habits, encourage responsible money management, and pave the way for a more secure future.
Furthermore, integrating financial education into the curriculum can help address socioeconomic disparities by providing all students, regardless of their background, with the tools to achieve financial independence and success. It’s not just about preparing students for careers; it’s about equipping them with the skills to lead fulfilling lives and make meaningful contributions to society.
My personal experience highlights the impact of a lack of early financial education and underscores the importance of equipping students with essential financial knowledge from an early age. By investing in financial literacy education, we can empower individuals to take control of their financial futures and build a more prosperous society for generations to come.
Terrina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 2021, when COVID-19 changed how we do things, I went back to work, and more people wanted to use contactless payments like Apple Pay or credit cards instead of cash. I also saw that some companies charged different fees for these payments, like Square.
This got me curious about how payment processing works. So, I started learning more about it. Soon, I realized that many people, especially minority and women-owned businesses, didn’t know much about this stuff.
That’s why I decided to start my own company to help people understand payment processing better. We’re all about being honest and teaching people about money. We want to help businesses save money on fees so they can use it to grow.
What makes us different is that we’re not just about making money. We really care about our clients and want to help them succeed.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
From a young age, I struggled with these emotions, finding it difficult to remain calm and understanding in challenging situations.
Growing up, I carried a deep-seated anger within me, stemming from various childhood experiences. This anger often manifested in impatience, especially when things didn’t go as planned or when I felt frustrated by the actions of others.
However, as I journeyed through life, I realized that my impatience and anger were hindering my personal and professional development. I recognized that true strength lies not in reacting impulsively but in responding with patience, empathy, and understanding.
So, I made a conscious effort to work on myself, focusing on cultivating patience and compassion. It was a gradual process, requiring self-reflection, mindfulness, and a willingness to change. I learned to pause before reacting, to take a deep breath, and consider the perspective of others, even when faced with challenging situations.
Through practice and perseverance, I began to see the positive impact of patience in my life. I found that by approaching situations with a calm and understanding demeanor, I could foster better communication, build stronger relationships, and navigate conflicts more effectively.
I learned to see beyond surface-level interactions and connect with others on a deeper level, appreciating their unique experiences and perspectives.
