Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Terrill Carter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Terrill, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the age of I won my first citywide talent show! The event was held at the centroplex downtown Baton Rouge. The stadium was packed and I went up against 25 other acts and won 1st place. That was the day, I knew I loved the stage and a music career would be my life long pursuit!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The first time I sang on stage was at the age of eight. By the time I was 13 I was recording in the studio with James DeBarge, his nephew Chico DeBarge and daughter Kristina DeBarge. At the age of 15 PaulTilman Smith of Bayarea’s Jazz society wrote me my first solo song called “What is Love”. By the time I reached my early twenties I had a fire inside of me and my dream was to move to Los Angeles and pursue music full time.
I moved to LA in 2011 and hit the ground running. I started performing at the Romanov theater in Studio City, Ca. at a show called R&B Live Hollywood. There I open for popular musical acts that include Faith Evans, Eric Benet, & Tweet to name a few.
I tried out for many shows in my early career…American Idol, Americas Got Talent, & The Voice and could never make it past the first audition. Then, not advancing on those shows tore me apart. I thought, “But I can sing and I know I have talent.” Today I realize that there’s a time for everything and everyone and then it was just not my time. With hard work and dedication, I continue pursuing my career as a singer… I released my debut solo album at the top of the year entitled “Feels Like This” in the states and in Europe under David Nathan ( The British Ambassador of soul) Warner X Label. The album was produced by six time BMI winner and legendary producer Preston Glass , Actor/ Entrepreneur Christian Belnavis and Bruce Carter. Im currently at number 26 on the CashBox Pop and Rock chart for my remake of “Exchange of Hearts” written by Jacky Jack White and performed and written by David Slater.
With the success behind my album and my growing following and supporters on social media I know now that this is my time to shine and I will continue to create the best for content and music for my fans!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The one lesson I had to unlearn is that success would be handed to me. I thought during my early career that I could sing, so someone would give me an opportunity. I would be disappointed when doors would close on opportunities because thought that my talented was enough. I know now that hard work and persistence makes a career. being driven to build your own doors and walk through them. No one is waiting to give you anything, you have to earn success just like you earn everything in your life. You have to be willing to show up for you, just as you show up for everyone else.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started my YouTube channel back in 2018… I had given up on trying out for talent competitions and decided to build my own following. I started posting covers and slowly began to grow on YouTube! By the time the shut down happen in 2020 my channel started to grow at a rapid pace. I’m currently at 4K and growing on YouTube and have a dedicated following from all over the world that tunes in every Friday Night Live Karaoke show. I post covers, live performances, acoustic performances, and more to keep my channel interesting! The key to social media is showing love back to the people that support you! Sometimes it’s hard to respond or comment when you’re busy in your real life… But taking the time to comment on others work and just showing people you’re a real person watching them, that will gain you a lot of loyal supporters on Social Media!
