We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terrie Nesbitt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terrie below.
Terrie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I am greatful to be able to earn a full-time living from my creative work through shows, royalties, and merchandise. It wasn’t always this way. I worked a full time job until June 2018. I decided to get on the road and promote my music. Through promo shows, giveaways, and common hand shakes, I created a fan base. This in-turn started getting me bookings. Being an indendent artist, we look for a for an overnight success story, but even with those stories, the artist has put in some hard work somewhere. I wish I could have sped up the process, but I think in due time, after the work is put in, after you’ve learned your craft and are really ready for the world, there is no timeing to it. It becomes a part of the process.
Karma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born and raised in a small town called Liberty, Tx. I grew up on 21 acres of land with a rodeo arena and cattle in the backyard. I’m a country girl at heart. I live with my Mom and I’m a single mother of 3 beautiful daughters ages 29, 25, 14. We take care of the homestead and each other. After I graduated high school, I attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Tx,. (side note) The money ran out and so did I. I then enlisted into the U.S. Army. There I served during The Persian Gulf War and was awarded the NDSM National Defense Service Medal.
I grew up singing. I would sing on the back of the bus daily. When it was talent show time, I created, and wrote most lyrical content for the entertainment my friends and I would do. It has always been my passion, my dreams and now my success.
It all started in the 90’s and my journey has been rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to work with greats in the industry and each time I tried to learn as much as I could from those conversations pertaining to my craft. Being an independent artist and releasing my music under my label, Itz Karma Entertainment, I had to learn the business. I attended several music and publishing conferences. I wanted to also earn money from my craft so I had to educate myself on what I was doing. What I think sets me aside from others is my knowledge in the business and my performances. I am my product. I am my brand. When I hit that stage, I am giving my audience every dime they could have thought about spending with me in smiles, fun and love and one heck of a time.
I just released my sophomore album July, 2o22 and it’s cutting through the airwaves. I am extremely excited. There is a little country, blues, R&B and more. With a guest feature from BMQ Brother Marquise from The 2 Live Crew, I even threw in some Hip Hop. This album is so much fun. I even have a feature with my daughter, The Princes. She is my middle one. My last album was solely Southern Soul and my performances are in high demand in cities such as Atlanta, Houston, Dallas and Birmingham. I’ve performed at major venues, with sell out crowds, such as The House Of Blues, Houston, Tx, The Blues Palace, Dallas,TX and The Sweet Auburn Music Festival in Atlanta, Ga. I’m grateful to win awards such as 2019 Best New Female Artist and Best Female Vocal with 5 nominations/2020 Best Female Blues Album, Female Artist on the Rise/ 2021 Nominated for two awards/2022 Nominated for Female Entertainer of the Year and Rising Female.
Quoted from Daddy B. Nice of Southern Soul RnB Corner “One of the finest of the scores of Southern Soul debuts in 2019 Itz Karma’s Karma: Unleashed” and gives the album a 4 of 5.
One thing that I constantly smile about are my fans and my followers. I am so grateful that they love my music. I look forward to always kicking it with the DJ and my fans. Another great thing is that I don’t just have one genre of music. With a background in Soul, R&B and Hip-Hop, I try to put a little extra flavor to any record I’m on. I also have pop, zydeco, country, EDM and Southern Soul music under my belt. This allows me to have a Blues show on Friday and a Hip-Hop or R&B show on Saturday. Lucky Me.
I enjoy what I do. I always find ways to do it. No matter what others may think is an obstical it is always the next level for me.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Once upon a time, I thought nothing could stop my music career or creating my Label. Husband, children, school, Job, just to name a few or to wrap it up…Life. Yes, There has been many times in my career I had to pivot. There is no question that life will interrupt your personal plans. The next question is, how do I deal with it? I realized my talents were not going anywhere. This was a vision granted to me. I had the ideas. I took the time to invest into my business when I couldn’t perform. Instead of getting bummed about the change, I used it as reverse marketing. I found ways to still build Itz Karma Entertainment, until I could get back to the norm.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In the essence of creating Itz Karma Entertainment, one of my main goals was to make sure no artist working with IKE would be taken advantage of. The same education and knowledge that I’ve received, I want to share with other artists, especially females. This is a male dominated industry and the more you know about the value of your craft, the better.
