We were lucky to catch up with Terria Nichols recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Terria thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?
One of the best investments I’ve made as business owner has been investing into a coach. Several coaches actually! After deciding to leave the corporate world to pursue fitness, I knew that finding people who were doing what I wanted to do would get me to where I wanted to be faster. I hired a business coach in 2020 and he helped me to create systems and organize my business model so that I could onboard new clients and manage existing clients with ease. My business coach also helped me create a pricing model that made sense and helped me to earn correctly for my coaching services.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My background is in the corporate world, I worked for over 10 years in the financial services and mortgage industries before deciding to take a leap of faith and leave it all behind to become a personal trainer. I worked for 3 years at a corporate gym before leaving to open my own training/coaching business. Today I help women build confidence inside and outside the gym, one workout at a time. Part of the reason I gained such a passion for fitness was because of my own fitness journey. After having my daughter in 2007 I realized I had gained 70 pounds and I no longer felt like myself. In addition to working in a field that was no longer fulfilling for me, I was carrying around 70 extra pounds and a bit of post partum as well. I decided that I had to do something which is when I started to learn more about everything health, wellness, and fitness. I realized that I loved the way I felt when I left the gym, I felt like I new woman and I wanted to help other women regain their own confidence so I decided to make fitness my full time career.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As the pandemic started and the country was quarantined I had to determine how I was going to keep my personal training business running if I was unable to meet clients and perspective clients in person. Many of the gyms were forced to shut down so I was forced to get creative and pivot my in person business model to a virtual one. Thankfully all of my clients were happy to train virtually and many of them let me know how important it was to be able to maintain their exercise regimen during what was an emotionally trying time.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Service and follow through! I pride myself on providing my clients with unforgettable service and following through with the the things I say I will do. There are a ton of options when it comes to finding a trainer but what sets me apart is the experience that I provide my clients with and the follow through that many clients report is missing with other experiences. Taking the time to learn about my clients and crafting an experience that is personal to them is what helps me to keep my clients coming back and to attract more.
