We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terri Sopher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Terri, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
I was allowed to run a television network that belonged to my boss. My boss allowed me to practice, discover, try, and fail with ideas I would never have imagined possible had I not been given the opportunity. I initially believed I could do nothing to make this startup work or be successful because I had never done video production or content creation; everything I’d ever done in the past was live-action, like stage plays, music, books, etc. But here, I had to come up with linear, fluid, informative, fun, exciting content that would also be true to my Christian faith. My boss allowed me to be true to myself while trusting me to give objective, educational, family-friendly content that would not stifle the growth of the network but make it more exciting and worth watching. When I asked for an opportunity to have my own entirely Christian, family-friendly, and faith-based network, he trusted that I would give my own the same commitment to quality that I gave to his network. The Bible speaks to this, “And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?” (Luke 16:12 NIV).

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I love telling people how I can fund my business. Chryso is entirely dependent upon DONATIONS! From day one, I believed God had led me to trust Him throughout the process. Because my “client” comes from the church culture, I felt led to not charge a price to put their content on the network. In the beginning, many of the people who joined me were taking risks themselves, making sacrifices using their resources to create content for me, so I wanted to give them space to create without having to come up with funds to keep their content on the platform. Although this has been a STRUGGLE, we have made it after four years! We have had very, very generous givers and donors who believed in what I was doing and so the need for it!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
To make my understanding of faith more relatable and meaningful, I had to let go of preconceived notions and biases. I tried to avoid being overly imposing in my approach and instead focused on presenting the Gospel so that people could see its relevance in their daily lives. It was important to me that faith became something tangible and applicable, rather than abstract and distant.
