We recently connected with Terri Becker and have shared our conversation below.
Terri, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Being a business owner is hard. Anyone who tells you it isn’t, is lying. There is no rule book.
There are things that come up that you could have never anticipated or thought of. Like how to be a successful new business during a global pandemic. There were times when I struggled because of the realities of being the sole owner of a boutique design and remodeling firm. All that it entails. It’s a LOT. Would it have been easier to take the easy out and go and work for a firm or back to corporate? Absolutely. Thankfully retreat is no longer part of my DNA. My father was a marine and taught me to be a soldier, to fight through and persevere. I’m so glad I have. Working for others and for the corporate world showed me many things. The last 4 years of business as Terri Becker Designs has been a beautiful adventure. And one I’m so proud of!
“Making Your Dream Space A Reality” is what I love to do. It’s truly my mission in life to make people fall back in love with their homes. To me, there is no better alchemy in the world.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I specialize in interior and exterior design for both residential and commercial remodels, leading teams to make projects happen. Terri Becker Designs was voted Best of DFW as the Best Interior Design Firm by the Dallas Morning News in 2021, also an ASID award-winning designer with the recognition of Houzz readers, too.
My biggest asset is that I think outside of the box, pushing clients creatively. I love a good challenge and thrive on innovation and creativity. I help clients create an oasis that becomes their new favorite escape. Clients enjoy working with me and my repeat clients rave about their transformations. Terri Becker Designs offers turn-key design services to realize a client’s vision. I am a trusted guide and partner throughout the entire remodeling process, from design planning to final touches, making the process as stress-free as possible.
“I am big on functionality and design. I want any space I work on to scream my client in the most elegant way possible. I am an Interior designer passionate about art, design, space planning, and function. I want your home to be the best reflection of you, your haven. My number-one desire is to have a room that takes your breath away.”
I am a mom, artist, curator, traveler, food critic, photographer, avid reader, and creator of breath-taking spaces.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
10 years ago, I left an abusive marriage and was going through a divorce with a small child. I was struggling to figure out how I was going to pay the bills and provide for my daughter. I was entertaining the idea of going back to the corporate world and a friend of mine at the time saw a talent in me and encouraged me to get into design. He hired me to remodel his condo. I’m so glad that I did because through that process I realized how much the design and remodeling process was something I not only was really good at, it was something I LOVED doing.
Changing that first space changed people’s lives and seeing the results of that created a resolve within me that no matter what I needed to do to make design my life, I would. I’ve been in design in one way or another since then and I couldn’t be happier. I believe it is truly one of my life’s callings.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My clients have helped me build my reputation, no doubt.
The beautiful thing about doing a remodel for a client is that it is not only a process of changing their home or business and making it pretty, but also about building a relationship of trust with them. And often, a lasting friendship. Remodeling is not a fun process, it’s turning your life upside down and inside out, but having someone they can rely on to guide you through the process and pitfalls is invaluable. Through that trust and relationship come additional projects and even full home remodels. To me, that is truly the best accolade.
Winning the Dallas Morning News People’s Choice awards for Best Interior Design Firm only 3 years into launching my business was confirmation of that putting people first is always the best recipe for success.
