We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terrence Wormack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Terrence, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I’m a huge Star Wars fan. I grew up watching the movies and following the stories. The most iconic scene to me is when Jedi Master Yoda is teaching Luke Skywalker the way of the Force. Luke struggling in learning says “Ok, I’ll give it a try”, to which Yoda admonishes him, “Try Not! Do or Do Not! There is No Try.” It became something that has encouraged me to “go for any dream I have” believing that I’ll be successful even before I start.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been a photographer, I suppose. At family gatherings, outings with friends, holidays, I’ve always pulled out a camera to capture the memory. However in 2019, I bought a Canon M50, which is my first interchangeable lens camera. I endeavored to teach myself how to capture images by manually exposure as opposed to the auto setting. I wanted to learn what happens when I control everything – the shutter speed, the aperture, the ISO, white balance, etc. I fell in love with photography in a whole different way and TryNot Images, LLC was born.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The greatest moments for me when doing a portrait photoshoot is when I’m capturing someone who has never been captured professionally. For those that have never had the experience of a professional photoshoot; when they see their images for the first time and have that light in their eyes as though they are seeing themselves in amazement – THAT’S the greatest reward.
Other times, I have photographed individuals as a means to boost their self esteem and confidence. To post their images on social media and see people regard them in the way they would a model is so satisfying.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest thing I’ve had to unlearn is having only one concentration as so many photographers have instructed me to do. What I mean is: so many photographers will have a “jack of all trades is a master of none” approach but I rather explore every aspect of photography in order to see what I truly enjoy. I like to let the genres find me by experiencing them all as opposed to doing one thing only. This is why I will accept the challenge or opportunity to capture images in a field that I’m not already familiar with (ie: Sports, Nature, Astro) I like to expand. This doesn’t mean I will become a nature photographer but I would truly regret it if I’d never took on the experience.
Other rebellious learning would include the fact that I currently don’t plan to be a photographer that only works for money. I love to create with individuals on a trade occasionally as well. This seems to be frowned upon by other photographers but I love the balance of both paid and trade work.
