We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terrence Springfield a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Terrence, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
I was working a job, installing Directv for some years. Every couple of years a new contractor owner would buy out other companies. We would have to start over with pay and new rule. This time they cut the money so low we couldn’t survive and would have to work harder for less moneys. That was the push I needed to search out better opportunity. I left the company and became an Operator manager for another cable company that promoted me as a boss over 5 other people that was already set in their ways. He molded me into running my own company one day.

Terrence, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
While working @ Direct tv as an operational manager. This position requires that I oversee the company operation and do install myself. One day I went to Vincent house for an installment, he owns a successful fence company call Express Fence. I promise him if he show me everything he knows, it wouldn’t be in vain. After this I was doing fencing and Directv at the same time. I was really hurting for money, and Vincent was paying 50 dollars every job. It’s wasn’t a lot of money but I needed to add to bills. I had family in my, eat wondering why would I keep going and wasn’t getting paid right. I told them I have a master plan. I work with Mr Vincent until, a family member wanted me to do their fence . I ask Mr Vincent to oversee the job with me because I was nervous, because this was a family fence. He told me, I wasn’t ready and give the job to a more qualified person. That broke my heart to hear that. I took our house mortgage money to rent tools at Home Depot and complete 400 ft fence by myself . It took me 2 weeks. When I finished the fence, it was beautiful. My family overpaid me and bought my first nail and compressor . I never been without work ever since. I thank God for the opportunity.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
When we got with Springforward fencing and Security Inc.. We bought a 100 signs from Signpros in Memphis Tn. We put sign throughout the city, on trees, corner, poles, and any places heavy traffic. We didn’t get a lot of calls at first and then the phone started to ring. I wanted every estimate that we went to but it didn’t work out that way. I used Craigslist, Facebook, ran ads on Facebook. Many days I sit in my driveway frustrated and questioning God, wondering why it’s not working. Many times I wanted quit but I couldn’t. I had a wife that had a stroke and know on dialysis three days a week. No job would keep me around getting her to the doctor.. We prayed and prayed now she off dialysis and doing fine.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
