Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Terrence Robinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Terrence thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
For me, I always had a knack for music and technology. I always found myself tinkering with music and started making beats. As early on in my teen years, I would spend my free time making beats, listening to music, and creating remixes. On the flip side growing up, I was also interested in computers and technology. I actually landed my first professional job after an internship in college at a very reputable financial technology company in Columbus, Georgia. Then the idea came to me. How hard would it be for me to do the same thing for myself?
I continued to learn the craft of software engineering and web design, but I also had a passion for music. I slowly started saving up money that I earned in my career for studio gear and things that I would need to start a business. I knew that I wanted to launch a business, but didn’t have the slightest clue of a business name. It came to me so vividly one day as I was visiting my grandmother as she was in the hospital: Resound Media. I later stuck with the name “Resound Solutions, LLC” because I believed that my company could grow and offer music creation and editing services, media services, and web design as well.
I started researching and finding out what was the best business model for me starting out as a solo entrepreneur. It took me a month to actually go through the process of filing for an LLC, getting all of the legal documents for my local jurisdiction, and making sure everything went smoothly. On January 1, 2021, I officially launched my company, Resound Solutions, LLC.
As an entrepreneur, it can sometimes be challenging handling multiple tasks between a professional career, business meetings, and even my personal life. It does take hard work, but it is so rewarding. My goal is for my company to be the sole source of my income, and I’m looking to work for my company full-time within the next 5 years.
Terrence, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Terrence Robinson. I am an African-American male born and raised in Columbus, Georgia.
I grew up in Columbus and received my first Bachelor’s degree from Columbus State University majoring in Information Technology. While in college, I got my first break in my professional career. I ended up applying for an internship to work at Total System Services (Global Payments). The manager was so impressed with my work ethic that they offered me a full-time position to work for the company while managing to work with my college schedule. I’m now still in the IT field with over 11 years of experience as a software engineer.
During my spare time growing up after work, I would love to make beats and listen to music. I would eventually start producing and engineering music for local artists until I would make a name for myself under a major label. Ino 2011, I signed a non-exclusive music contract with Defient Entertainment, a subsidiary of Grand Hustle Records (T.I’s label) at that time. Unfortunately, the deal took a turn for the worse due to mismanagement and I started making music independently. Music became such a passion for me that I decided to go back to college and pursue a degree for it. In December of 2019, I received my second Bachelor’s degree from Full Sail University majoring in Audio Production.
After all of this, I had a thought. If I could do all of this for other companies, why not run a business myself and offer these same services? That’s what I decided to do. I did the research and filed the necessary paperwork to start a business. On January 1, 2021, I officially launched Resound Solutions, LLC., offering web design, music production and editing, and media services.
I started also exploring other types of media, especially in television and broadcast. I got an early start on the weekends at my local church where I would volunteer on the audiovisual team. There was a news anchor that attended the church and she recommended that I applied for an open position at WRBL News 3 as a production assistant. Within 3 months of being there, I moved from being the assistant audio engineer to being the permanent technical director every weeknight.
As my weekly schedule started filling up as I got older and wiser, time management skills became crucial for me. I knew how valuable my time was every single day. My parents instilled a good work ethic in me, and taught me the value of a dollar. I believe that is what sets me apart and makes me unique. I have a keen ability to learn quickly, manage time wisely, and work hard.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My side hustle of making beats definitely turned into my main business. At the age of 19, I started going by the alias “TRobDaProducer”, which is still a nickname I use even today. I started uploading beats on SoundCloud and eventually started my own website. As I got older, I decided to expand beyond making beats and merge the “TRobDaProducer” brand to my current business, Resound Solutions, LLC. It just make sense to offer multiple solutions to my clients under one “umbrella” business.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As much as people lose touch with reality with the growing use of social media, I still think that promoting my business by word-of-mouth still works and is as effective as social media marketing. About 80% of my clients have been achieved by having my friends and family tell others about the services that my business offers.
