We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terrell Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terrell below.
Terrell, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I think ever since I was a kid I knew I wanted to do art professionally in some sense. The first job I can remember myself wanting to do was a cartoonist. Also, my Aunt Linda is a very talented portrait artist and when I was young she would show me her amazing pieces and tell me that people buy them from her. At the time that showed me that you can actually monetize your craft. Ever since then I’ve been searching for my own ways to get paid doing what I love most.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a digital artist and I sell my work through the crypto art scene. I’ve been creating art ever since I was a kid. I can remember being inspired to create my own characters after my older brother came home from school one day with a cool looking Dragon Ball Z drawing.
I got into the crypto art scene after I saw a string of big sales in late 2020 / early 2021. I saw that artists like me were actually owing paid what they were worth and I wanted to try my hand in it. Early on, it was hard for me to find a community and even a platform that I could mint on. There’s a popular site called Foundation that’s great for 1/1s. I eventually found my way onto there in late January and minted as soon as I could. My genesis piece (first minted piece) sat for months. At the time I didn’t know that community was such a huge part of selling work.
Around July that year I was able to find the twitter art community and that later led me to find the NFT community. Once that happened, everything changed. I was able to consistently sell my art for amounts of money I’d never seen before.
In terms of my art, my main mission is to connect with viewers in a way that ticks parts of their brains that aren’t usually ticked. I want to bring back memories that people forgot they have. I love nostalgia and the space it controls in the mind.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I think I approached my audience growth with a slow and steady pace. Finding the right communities really helped with that. My advice would be to stay consistent with content and don’t be afraid to follow others first. I don’t post art everyday but I try to stay consistent with my posts and art. I’d also suggest interacting with people on your timeline. It goes a long way.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love creating. I don’t know what I’d be doing without it. My favorite part of creating is seeing things in my head become things that others can see as well. I feel like I have a lot of cool things to show everyone but it’s up to me to bring it to life in a palatable manner.
