We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terrell Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terrell below.
Terrell, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Ok well in music, especially over the past few decades, there’s been this lack of love. Me being in the genre of R&B I take that personally, especially knowing what love can really do. So that’s how it became my mission, to bring the love back. To remind people yes we do need each other and we are better together. It’s my mission to also talk, sing & write about all aspects of love, I want everyone to be seen lol. In love we have the good, the bad, the ugly & the sexy; and that’s what I wanna translate. For me being black man my mission is to also tap in to “Black Love” just reminding us that we are on the same team, also we are stronger & better together. There’s a sort of division I wanna bridge the gap on, just turn to your social media and you’ll see it.
Terrell, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Rell Cox the songwriting singer. I specialize in R&B music, I specialize in LOVE. Love making, love building, love ending, love mending and all the above. Unfortunately for me but fortunately for my supporters I been through enough in this love thing to be able to relate, inspire & resonate with you all. I feel my most proud when people reach out to me about what my music has done for them or what it’s doing. Whether it’s mending their relationship, whether it’s aiding them in the bedroom, whether it’s making them feel like they’re not alone in what they’re feeling (especially MEN) some of us have a hard time expressing ourselves, so if I’m able to write and make something they can resonate with to the point they can just press play and feel seen, I’ve done my job. I LOVE & truly thank God for the gift of songwriting that he gave me. It’s like my little special key to unlock the true meaning & messages of life. I also love to write songs for women. Writing from a woman’s perspective is another way I attempt to bring that gap and bring us closer. I grew up and have nothing but women in my family, strong ones too and I studied them unknowingly all these years. As well as being a great listener, those few things together made me the songwriter I am today. I love that feeling of having a simple conversation with an artist or client and being able to shock them with my ability to come up with a whole song out it.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being a creative is a constant struggle. I am constantly at the mercy of the consumer based on what I create out of thin air lol. As a songwriter/artist there’s no book I read to tell or show me what to write about today and whatever it is I do come up with, it has to be good enough people wanna hear it and share it to others. That’s a difficult task within itself and if I’m being honest can be extremely rough on the mental. Wondering and pondering whether you’re good enough. Constantly questioning your choice to get into it and whether it’s worth it. It also not being as appreciated as it should. Think of it this way, a songwriter/artist is just as important as a surgeon. There’s music EVERYWHERE and music inspires us all in some way shape or form. Music has brought people through their most difficult times, music heals, music saves. And who’s responsible, the songwriter/artist. With that being said there are times where I doubted myself. Times when I took a break from it because things weren’t happening fast enough for me and my reality required it to if I was going to be putting my time into it. Living in NYC is expensive lol. But yea there’s that struggle between what you know God has called you for and what your reality is. And sometimes that reality won and I put the music on the back burner. The key is I never forgot it tho, I just can’t. That’s how I know I’m meant for something greater. God gave me the gift and he will continue to equip me with all I need. Resilience
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Just to piggy back off of the last story. I’ve had to pivot many of times. Just to face my reality, bills needed to get paid and music wasn’t doing it. Then it’ll to the point is get so wrapped up in working that I put music aside. Life is real but so are your dreams. I encourage anyone listening to just find your balance
