Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Terrance Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Terrance, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Growing up in a two-parent household had a profound impact on me, as my parents served as significant influences in my life. My father’s emphasis on discipline instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility and self-discipline. His guidance taught me the importance of setting goals, working hard, and staying focused. On the other hand, my mother’s nurturing nature provided me with a loving and supportive environment. Her care and compassion taught me the value of empathy, kindness, and the importance of emotional well-being. Together, my parents balanced their roles beautifully, creating a harmonious and structured environment that instilled in me the values and principles that continue to shape me today. Having a nuclear family was a vital foundation that provided me with stability, love, and the guidance necessary for personal growth and success.
Terrance, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After the passing of my grandmother due to Alzheimer’s, I embarked on a transformative journey that led me to become a passionate mental health advocate. Immersing myself in the industry, I delved into research, engaged in speaking engagements, and recently had the incredible opportunity to deliver my first TED Talk. In this powerful talk, I shared my personal experiences and emphasized the importance of mental health for all individuals, with a particular focus on men. Through various projects and initiatives, my goal is to spread awareness and break down the barriers surrounding mental health, highlighting its significance in our overall well-being, just as immunity is crucial for physical health.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I apologize for the misunderstanding. Here’s a revised paragraph:
“There’s a quote that deeply resonates with me: ‘Everybody that helps you isn’t your friend, and everybody that fights you isn’t your enemy.’ This quote perfectly captures a time in my life when I allowed others to steer me in a career direction that they believed was best for me. I was influenced by their opinions and lived under the dogma that they knew what was right for my path. However, I eventually realized that while these people claimed to be helping me, their actions were driven by their own agendas and self-interest.
It was a valuable lesson that taught me the importance of critically evaluating the intentions behind others’ guidance. I discovered that some individuals were more focused on their own benefits rather than genuinely supporting my growth and fulfillment. This realization prompted me to reflect and reassess my choices.
Now, I am more discerning about the advice I receive and the people I surround myself with. I trust my own intuition and make decisions that align with my authentic desires and aspirations. This experience has empowered me to break free from the dogma that others know what’s best for me and to forge my own path, guided by my own judgment and genuine support from those who truly have my best interests at he
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The willingness to never give up. Being a Mental Health Advocate comes from a purpose bigger than yourself. What was once a taboo topic has now been more ubiquitous than ever. So if you get into this field first ask yourself, “Where can I make the most impact”.
