We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terrance Watson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terrance below.
Terrance, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I first came up with the idea for my business, while organizing belts in my dresser drawer. I never had a location to keep them so I began to roll them up and sit them in my drawer. The only issue was, they would often unroll them selves, and my attempt to be neat was failing. Then one day I thought if my drawer had a recessed area for my belts to sit in, they would hold in place perfectly. From there, the concept was born. I began to think what other items could also be organized in this fashion. So I focused on other items that I often misplaced. I settled on belts, sunglasses watches, rings, cell phone, and loose change. I also incorporated a catch all drawer for other miscellaneous items. I believed this was a worthwhile endeavor because I felt if I struggled to locate these items, then others must have the same issue. The problem that I solved was collocating these items in a dedicated space where they can easily be located when needed. A secondary benefit is the items are protected from damage. My design is unique in nature because no other product features the ability to organize all of these items in one space.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
About me. Prior to this endeavor I had no background in inventing, developing or bringing a product to market. After graduating high school, I immediately joined the Air Force and served for 22 years. Those numerous assignments, deployments and high level management positions empowered me to think I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Through research, studying and asking countless questions, I willed the process forward and eventually produced the tangible product known as Klassic Organizer. My product is an extension of me. I’ve always strived to maintain my surroundings in a neat and organized fashion. Attention to detail is a must and I like to keep everything in order in all facets of my life. These qualities are integral to my design. I am most proud of the level of quality, Klassic Organizer possesses, and that sets us apart from the competition. There are other items available that are smaller, cheaper and lack the same level of quality. As always as a consumer, you get what you pay for. I provide a high-quality product built to withstand the test of time.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The quickest path to a destination is often a straight line. To develop a concept that originated in your mind and turn it into a tangible item, that path is full of twists, turns and dead ends. At times it may become necessary to pivot and take a different path. I witnessed this on my journey to develop Klassic Organizer. I endured my first manufacturers broken timelines, empty promises, and failed attempts to produce my vision. After working with them for a year and a half I had to make the hard decision to part ways and locate a new manufacture. I had to pivot and take a new direction in order to progress. This was not an easy decision due to having precious time, money and effort invested. Yet that was my only recourse. This meant almost starting over from square one. Faith tells me everything happens for a reason. Through my new manufacture, my design was taken to another level and I was delivered a better product than I originally conceptualized. As it turns out pivoting may not be a bad thing and can turn out to be your saving grace.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Our business was launched during the pandemic which left no opportunities to attend gatherings such as trade shows or exhibitions prior to selling. We debuted with our website that is directly linked to our product page on Amazon. We also set up a page on Etsy and fulfilled orders on our own. The decision to use Amazon allowed us access to a huge shopping audience. Although we sell on Amazon, it does take quite some effort to be visible on that platform. There are both pros and cons to selling on Amazon. Specifically Klassic is sold at a price point that some consider high. Most items sold on Amazon are not high end items. Due to this, we are seeking other opportunities to sell where other like price items are sold. Because we sell on Amazon, the consumer is not able to appreciate the level of quality and workmanship our brand offers. Klassic is an item that needs to be seen in person in order to touch it and visually assess the quality presented. As a brand we continue to grow, evolve and adjust to reach our target audience.
