We were lucky to catch up with Terrance Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Terrance, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I took a risk in 2011 when I packed up my whole life and moved to China. I was ready for a fresh start, and I needed to reinvent myself. I had just gotten out of cancer treatment, and it was a low for me. My health was starting to return, and it felt like the reset button had been hit. I signed up for a job in China online and took a real gamble. I landed in a place that made no sense to me. I could not read the signs; people were on the bus with chickens and deadly fireworks, there were holes in the road, police were chatting on the hood of the car with no shoes on, and people were driving on the sidewalk and into oncoming traffic. I was in a new place back in September 2011.

Terrance, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am known as DJ Mr T. I am from Fort Worth Texas and have completed over 1,500 events in six countries since 2013, including China, South Africa, and Thailand. I specialize in professional communications, crowd engagement, and product/service promotion. I had a residency at Magma Club, Chengdu, China, and with the Golden Yacht company in Sanya, China, for three years. In 2019, I became the resident DJ at the Atlantis Resort in Sanya, China. I was featured in DJ Mag Asia in 2018. Today, I am a disco house producer, with 2025 music releases such as Dallas Crank It, FunkyTown USA, and Dallas Disco Vibes. My music is now available on Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, Iheart Radio, and Youtube @djmrtlive.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My first residency as a DJ was 12 years ago in Le Cafe Paname. I had no idea what I was doing as a new DJ and got fired. I just kept going and got new jobs along with new gigs. It never stopped me.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is my wife, Kareena. We met in Chengdu, China, and were later married in Hong Kong. We are now in Richardson, where we serve the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
