We recently connected with Terrance Hutchins and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Terrance thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share a story with us from back when you were an intern or apprentice? Maybe it’s a story that illustrates an important lesson you learned or maybe it’s a just a story that makes you laugh (or cry)? Looking back at internships and apprenticeships can be interesting, because there is so much variety in people’s experiences – and often those experiences inform our own leadership style.
I interned at two different companies. Both were in sales and the first one involved me going door to door to businesses selling print advertising in the back of a school planner. This was my first experience people had no problem being rude and abrasive to a naive college kid. However it taught me about perseverance and consistency. I learned the value of just repeating the process I was taught over and over even if you don’t see results. Eventually I got most of sales at the end of summer and led my team. I wouldn’t go back and do something like that again but the lessons learned I still apply today.
Terrance, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I run a Registered Investment Advisory(RIA) firm called Logos Financial Group and a tax and business consultancy firm called Logos Tax and Business Solutions. I graduated with a business degree from the University of North Texas and I am not married with 3 kids. I got into the financial industry after interning at a large financial services company my senior year in college. My business is now focused on working with individual clients who are approaching or in retirement, business owners and real estate investors. We also provide group financial coaching through a low cost subscription service and a financial wellness program provided by small businesses to their employees. I am passionate about helping people be free from the stress of money and using money as a tool to accomplish their life goals.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I have built my reputation on education and putting my clients first. My clients trust me because they know I am informed and honest. I spend 20+ hours a week reading, researching or consuming content from industry experts. I value the client experience and want to make working with our firm a streamlined and easy process. I believe my clients value that and knowing they can trust the information I am providing to them.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
Yes one of the challenges the average consumer faces in the financial industry is having access to good information. Most large firms are either sales oriented or are only looking to work with clients who have in excess of $500K in investable assets. That is not the majority of people, specifically in the minority community. That’s why I wanted to have multiple offerings, whether that’s a nominal monthly fee for financial coaching and access to software tools to help people manager their money, hourly or project based fees or a standard asset management fee. People who aren’t in a position to pay for advice we can service through our financial wellness program we offer to companies for their employees. The tax business broadly offers tax planning, accounting and business consulting. I also personally invest in real estate to build an additional stream of income.
