Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Terrance Brashun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Terrance, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I find myself to be most happy when I’m being a creative. It can be frustrating, no doubt, but the joy of seeing everything come together as good as I imagine it or better is an amazing feeling. I have a regular job for the time being and everyday I push forward, waiting for the day to come when I can live off the profits of my creations. I just feel pinned down sometimes. Working a 9 to 5 is cool, but its a mental trap and I sometimes get frustrated when I feel it binding me.
Terrance, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, I’m a director, writer, actor, artist, graphic designer, photographer – all rolled into one. I’m whatever I need to be for my project to be made. I got into film from getting my degree in Visual Communications. It just seemed like the next level of creating after doing music and being an author. What better way to deliver my stories to my audience than actually bringing them to life? I started my own streaming service called Villainwood (www.villainwood.com) after Amazon Prime kinda held me from putting my last project, Black Veteran, on their platform. Now I have no one controlling or telling me how to deliver my art to the masses. I create whatever I want, tell the story how I want, and put it out as my complete vision for people to see on my own streaming platform. Classic Villain now offers music, clothing, books, art and film for your listening, wearing, reading and viewing pleasure. I think the thing that sets us apart is that we don’t focus on one singular thing to do, we want to do it all. I want to use every ounce of talent God has put in my body. I’m most proud of the reactions that I get from people discovering my talents. It’s like letting them peel back one layer and discover a new one as they dive deeper into my work. I want everyone to know that I still got more coming. Log on to classicvillain.com and stay up to date with all of it, you’ll find something to enjoy.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think NFTs are a beautiful thing. I created a special collection of NFTs called VillaiNFTS with utilities to allow buyers the chance to have exclusive art and membership access to Villainwood (www.villainwood.com) by purchasing them. Me and Maxx Calzz sat down together and put the whole project into action.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You can’t help everyone. Everyone can’t go on your journey. No matter how cool and sweet they may seem, they can be a rotten apple to your bunch. I called myself wanting to build a solid foundation of go to actors and crew with my first film, Ridge Run. I had people give their word that they would help with the project, only to pull out on me at the last minute and then I had to scramble to make it work. Being in the military helped me strengthen my mental muscles so I can pivot on the fly. I had an actress not show up on the day of filming after telling me that she would be there, we kept it moving without her. The photographer of the film tried to kill the project by dropping out and not giving me the rights to the pics she had taken during filming as well as other projects she was involved with as well. The crew that was there stepped in and we made it work. It sucks to want the best for someone and they not return that sentiment as well. In the end, however, the project was what I consider a success for my first time out and a great start to this journey.
