We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Terisa Griffin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Terisa, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was 7 years old my dad who was a preacher, called my sister up to sing and I said out loud in church “Dad I can Sing too”! I have been singing g ever since!! I love singing ! Decided after college the calling was too great so I packed up my car, threw a coin up on the US map; it fell on Illinois and Chicago became my home!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
That’s a lot of questions in one! I’m a creative artist/ songwriter/ musician/ Performer! I vibe with my audience but I always set the tone! I’ve worked a lot over the years because I always recreate myself but stay true to who I am!
My Brand is simple….”I am Grown”! Grown people are careful with their dollars so I siesta give them the best that I have! I sing what they love whether it’s by me or someone else! The bottom line is to produce and perform a great entertaining show! This formula has allowed me to financially sustain myself and stay true to me!!
My audience / Family of Fans are importNt to me so I give them authenticity in all I do!
During Covid I sang and cooked with my home show “Tea Thyme” it was beautiful and loving like Mamas kitchen set to nourish my fans stomach and soul! This connection keeps me and my fans connected even during uncertain times! We were able to love on one another while God showed them another talent I had! Making the Proverb of creativity the biggest Blessing!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I was offered deals that I knew weren’t good for me! I knew I would suffer spiritually financially and emotionally! So while I was desperate for a deal I was not desperate for defeat! Anything that would rape my dreams and soul I had to walk away from it! Some people felt I needed to get my foot in the door but I knew it would feel more like a foot in my ass so I chose ME!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’m on a mission to give Adults the music their souls crave! Somehow the industry forgot about Adults in their marketing of R&B music and it’s not dead! I’m here to prove it! I’m here to prove that getting older is a beautiful blessing! We can dress like adults and allow our kids to want to dress like us! It’s ok to grow up and that our music is Timeless so MARKET TO US AND BRING OUR SEXY AUTHENTIC R&B sounds BACK!
