We recently connected with Teri Starr and have shared our conversation below.

Teri , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?

I would say my most meaningful project is the first ever song I wrote and released. It’s called “puppeteer” and it’s streaming on all platforms. This song means a lot to me because I was in a very dark place when I wrote the lyrics. I came completely out of my comfort zone. It took me about 3 hours to write and I didn’t even have an instrumental for it. This song represents multiple things in my life at the time I felt had a hold on me and control. Such as addiction, toxic people, etc…“puppeteer” is the first song I ever shared with the world. I was extremely nervous to even record it let alone put it out there because I didn’t want anyone to judge me. I slowly got over that because I realized everyone goes through things and you never know who’s out there who needs to hear it that can relate.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I’m Teri Starr, age 23, Indie Alternative Rock artist from central Florida. I currently have an EP called “indie, Fendi, Prada” a couple singles and another EP in the works called “upside down”. You can stream all of my music on all platforms. I think what sets me apart from people is my aesthetic. I’ve always been judged by stereotypical people because of the way I dress, the music I listen to and how I carry myself since grade school. People will notice I dress edgy, y2k, punk rock, and just assume I’m “trouble” or “rebellious”,“no morals”, but on the inside I’m such a soft spoken, caring, emotional person, just trying to get through life like everyone else. I love a variety of rock, alternative music. I would say I’m most proud of myself for getting the courage to put myself out there. I’ve always been the super shy girl in the background with so much to say but never spoke in the group. Just 5 months ago I started releasing songs and building my confidence, but, honestly it’s still nerve wracking every time I have a release. My words of advice to anybody out there in this world. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something you’re really passionate about doing. Always stay true to yourself because at the end of the day this is your story.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist from my personal experience is releasing a song, then over time watching the streams go up. It really makes me feel good to know that I can create something that other people can vibe to and bond over. Looking back and realizing people appreciate your work makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something and you matter.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

My social media audience is slowly growing everyday. I’ve come to learn that building your audience on social media takes patience and consistency. When I first started my artist pages.. I started posting something everyday sometimes multiple times a day but got no interactions for weeks. I even took a break because I was getting discouraged working on a video edit or a post for hours and then getting no more than 20 likes. One day I just went for it and posted a clip of one of my released songs and I received the most views and likes I’ve ever received on TikTok. This made me want to keep posting to find my audience. It’s all about the algorithm finding your crowd.. you can use hashtags that describe you and the people you want to reach. Just never give up no matter how many likes you get because over time it will grow if you keep putting your content out there.
