We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Terha Newby. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Terha below.
Hi Terha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
You know, I think one of my favorite aspects I love to see in a business is if it’s family owned or not. I love the idea of a family building a legacy that could be carried out from one generation to the next. I have three little boys, all under the age of 6, and they LOVE to get their hands dirty with me while assembling flowers. Now I know dealing with flowers may not bring them as much joy as it brings me joy. But, the older they get, I know them dealing with floral will be a skill they can add under their belt; even if it’s not something they pursue.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a florist in Southern California for 7 glorious years! My friend and I actually started this business together after we both offered to do my sister’s floral for her wedding. After assembling flowers for her wedding, I personally learned quickly about a love for flowers I never knew I had. This newly found outlet of mine is where I realized that I could start expressing my creativity in the most fun and beautiful way. My friend decided this route was not for her and she left the business and we are still amazing friends-don’t worry!
I am so proud of where my business is at today, so proud. I don’t take any of my clients’ for granite and feel so honored when people choose my as their florist. I am constantly learning new methods in floral assembly, staying up to date with seasoned blooms, and continually growing to ensure I can remain consistent in all aspects in this trade so I can always be ready to turn my clients’ dreams into a reality for them. I am so proud of where my business is at today.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I take such pride in creating a strong bond with each and every client. I don’t ever treat this job as “make money and jet” sort of thing-it’s so much more than that. Over the course of designing, endless emails, and fun chit chat for an event, a beautiful relationship is usually created. On top of that, I love following my clients on social media to stay connected after their event is over. I truly enjoy sitting back watching their life stories unfold; it’s so amazing to whiteness. Seeing my clients get married, traveling around the world together, starting a family together , getting promoted, etc., is just beautiful. When I become your florist, I feel I become apart of your fan club, haha! Which in turn means I will be cheering you on from the sidelines even after my professional job is done.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I feel when one feels the need to pivot in their career, that is where change and the good growth usually happens. This personally happened to me when my partner decided to back out 2 1/2 years of being together; I had the choice to stop the business or keep it going. After much thought and deliberation and support from my husband and my ex-partner, I decided to keep the business going but knew I had to make a strong pivot if I was going to pursue this solo. I have been now doing this business solo for 5 years and have grown so much, business-wise and personally by making a pivot to focus more on design growth with a strong focus on communication while concurring each and every vision that crosses my path.
