We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Teresa Wright Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Teresa , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I guess I really did not come up with the idea of being a speaker, trainer, or coach. I have been leading others since I was a child. And I love to speak. In fact, my parents used to call me as a kid eyewitness news. As well as being a leader in high school PTSA President. JROTC Group Commander. In college, Business Club Vice President, Legal Club Leader and in the community PTSA President, Chairperson of Several Boards. I have always helped others. But focusing on the topics that I do now in speaking, training, and coaching truly is from lived experience. One thing for sure ever since I can remember I wanted to be a business owner. I started my first babysitting business at about 10 years old. And I had a booming babysitting business while in high school where I employed other teenagers. I worked for several corporate companies in the past. But when I became a mother corporate America and the 9-5 job life was not going to work for me. I found myself at first starting a daycare. And I loved talking to and supporting the mothers. I also enjoyed being a leader in moms organizations supporting mothers there as well. Hence where my passion and love for parent education and support came. And I train, coach, and speak on business per my experience as a business owner since being a kid and all thru my adult life. The other things I train, speak, and coach about are topics such as mental health, domestic violence, and parenting. I focus on these topics because at times I have struggled or had hard experiences in these areas. I decided to not let any of these hard challenges break me but learn and heal from them. Then I turned around to help others do the same thing as a certified life coach, business coach, Certified parent educator, certified and mental health professional.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I truly got into my industry of speaking, coaching, and training to help others thru my lived experience. And I also love learning. So, I made / make sure to find as many resources and training as possible to strengthen my skills and knowledge in the various subject matters I provide support in thru my business. One other way of life to be a successful business owner I consider important is work life balance. So, being a mom and wife, I always remember to make time for those key parts of my life. Yet making sure to take time for myself and selfcare too. MOREOVER, A HUGE PART OF MY BUSINESS IS Relationship Building and Community. Therefore, I created my business MOM Biz Boss which is a group of business owners that are also mothers or women that support mothers thru their services or products. By creating my own community, I can build even more relationship and support what I do as well as help other women do the same thing.

Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
Another thing I have learned over the years is that it is important for your business to have multiple revenue streams. It may be difficult at times if you only have one source, product, or service to bring in income. I have made sure to over the years learn how to generate various streams of income. I also teach and coach other mom / women business owners on how to do the same thing. Here are some of the various streams of income I have coming into my business.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I walked away with NOTHING from a marriage via domestic violence which I co-owned / operated a business. I rode the bus, for years got public assistance for a few months, lost a child, worked several low wage jobs, and experienced depression. And yet I kept helping others, pushed myself, was a 100 % there’s as a mom. I have co-written four books now, I am international bestselling author, I am an awarded parent advocate, mom, and business owner a few times over. I have decided to use my lived life experience to help others and create businesses too.
