We were lucky to catch up with Teresa Heath-Wareing recently and have shared our conversation below.
Teresa, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Starting my business was a massive risk! After finishing a degree in marketing I spent a decade working in every different marketing role you can imagine. I was a great employee and I loved it!
However, after 10 years in various marketing roles I found myself as a single parent of a 4 year old. I was head of marketing for a marketing agency and after coming through a separation I thought I needed a change. I joke I must have gone through an early midlife crisis because without getting another job I handed my boss 8 weeks’ notice, thinking I am really good at my job I am sure I will get another. One thing I overlooked was that I was on a good salary and lived in a small town and jobs like that weren’t often available. 3 weeks into my notice and no job offers I started looking at other options, including starting my own business. My boss found out this might be the case and understandable asked me to leave! Within one week I had started my new marketing business!
Teresa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my business as a marketing consultant and agency. I worked super hard and managed to get clients and started bringing money in,
However after a few months I was exhausted and was working longer and harder than ever before! I was overwhelmed and worn out!
And in an attempt to be at the top of my game and started to pay to do online training, join communities, memberships and masterminds in order to increase my knowledge.
I loved how you could go online and have an experts training at your fingertips. I also loved the fact that they could help so many people from around the world
And I wanted the same!
Fast forward a few years, I now have my own 6 figure online business! I am also an award winning international speaker & TEDx speaker and have spoken on some of the most amazing stages with amazing people!
I am a bestselling author of a multi author book that hit the number 1 slot in 9 categories in the amazons charts.
I am the host of the popular weekly podcast “Your Dream Business Podcast” where I get to interview entrepreneurial royalty like Amy Porterfield, Michael Hyatt, Dean Graziosi, Jasmine Star, Stu Mclaren, Mike Stelzner and so many more!

How did you build your audience on social media?
When I first started my marketing agency we offered done for you services including social media. After working in marketing for almost 20 years I am a fan of businesses using social media to get themselves out there and grow their audience.
The key aspects that have worked for me and I would recommend are …
Be consistent – this doesn’t mean posting every day, it means deciding how often you can post and stick to it.
Engage – this is almost more important than posting. You need to make sure you are engaging with your followers especially if they have engaged with you – ensure you reply to any comments.
Another great way that has worked for me in terms of growing my social media is speaking. By speaking you are getting in front of bigger audiences and its a great opportunity to share your social media and gain new followers.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
There are a lot of people in the online industry who make out like having an online business is an easy way to make passive income and create your dream life with super yachts, sports cars and teams of people to take care of your every need and that’s just not the case!
However this elaboration of the industry has led to lots of people flocking to the online world as their way to make their millions and become famous!
Believe me as an online business owner I can tell you that there is nothing passive about the money I make and I am some way off ordering that Yacht!
So in the eyes of the industry I may not be seen as ‘successful’ But I am let me explain why!
But as soon as I came into the online business world I started to see what others used to define success and this was a massive mistake!
They defined success as launching expensive online products (regardless of the quality) that hit multiple 6 figures. I realised that success isn’t defined by a launch figure or how many followers you have on instagram, nowhere near as simple, it’s so much more than that!
Success for me is defined by many things, like do I love what I do and I am happy, do I have a balance in my life for people and things I love, do I have an income that can support how I want to be?
I love what I do and if I won the lottery tomorrow I would still do it! That feels pretty successful to me!
