We recently connected with Tere Gusmus and have shared our conversation below.
Tere, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I am convinced my creative career came at the best possible time. If I had begun “The Style Chase” earlier during my previous career, I would not have been able to dedicate the energy and time necessary to produce and edit each video or photograph properly.
I do recommend to those who are interested in pursuing a creative project to first consider the creative project as a hobby. It is extremely difficult to monetize an artistic endeavor.
Tere, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After a career in a corporate and a legal environment, I intentionally took time preparing to begin a life that would be much different and a bit less structured. After some time away from an office setting, I was able to pursue my creative outlets full time.
I have always sought out ways to fulfill the need to be creative. Over time, this creative path has taken several directions. I have dabbled in music and visual arts that include both photography and videography.
By combining videography and photography with my additional interests in home entertaining; travel; interior decorating and fashion, it only seemed natural to develop YouTube’s “The Style Chase” channel in order to share ideas with my subscribers.
The creation of “The Style Chase” lifestyle channel provides a platform for sharing creative ideas with my viewers.
“The Style Chase” was created to entertain and give viewers a peek inside a stranger’s life and, hopefully, the viewer is left with a new idea. That new idea may be a new recipe; an interior decorating inspiration; thoughts of travel; fashion innovation, or creative home entertaining ideas.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I truly believe the urge to be artistically creative is innate. A person who is not artistically creative may see this work as a folly or as self-indulgent. The only way I have been able to explain this difference is to ask those who do not understand the need to create to imagine a world without art; music or visual entertainment. Without colorfully artistic individuals, we would live in a very grey world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
No, there isn’t. Seriously, at this time I am just enjoying my work. Having a goal or mission is precisely what I have tried to avoid at this point in my life. After a career of schedules and limitations, I want the excitement of the unknown. I do my best, however, to produce a YouTube video each week, as well as, post content on Instagram that is entertaining and interesting, but I have no long-term strategy in place.
