We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Teny Chen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Teny below.
Alright, Teny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
TENY1010: it’s my personal design brand. My parents met playing tennis, so named me Teny, after the sport. 1010 (Ten Ten) is one of my many nicknames. I merged the two, Teny and 1010, to create TENY1010. I love the balance of the four letters with the four numbers.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
TENY1010 started out as just an Instagram name, but it has evolved into my brand and identity. It encompasses my passion for snowboarding, wakeboarding, boxing, dancing, and traveling. I’ve been to twenty-one states, thirty-four countries, six continents, and counting. There is always an abundance of content to capture and share! TENY1010 represents a lifestyle characterized by boundless adventure and limitless possibilities.
Design has always been my passion. I took a graphic design class in high school and it was love at first Photoshop. I have since transitioned to a UX Visual Designer. I love the personal feel of UX (user experience) design.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is my ability to express myself in my art. This comes through in all areas of my life: in my designs and also in my hobbies such as dance, martial arts, snowboard, etc. I have switched from graphic designer to UX designer. I feel accomplished when I use my empathy to connect with the user, and to create the ultimate experience. They can effortlessly enjoy the product through my creative lens.
Have you ever had to pivot?
A couple years ago I pivoted from Graphic Design to UX Design. I had been in the Graphic Design field for over 10 years, and I had plateaued. I wanted a change, something challenging but still creative. I had always been more interested in the tech aspect of design. I completed the Google Coursera UX Design certification. I took on more UX projects and worked more closely with web developers. The engineering collaboration was exciting. I fully transitioned to the user experience world.
