We recently connected with Temiloluwa Egebrongbe and have shared our conversation below.
Temiloluwa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you manage your own social media?
Hello, My name is Temi. As a growing business owner, I currently run every aspect of my business single handedly, including social media. Of course overtime, my goal is to be able to outsource but for now, i’m the only that gets the job done.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I love telling people about what I do, I’ll talk about it everyday if I could. My name is Temi, i am a Makeup Artist and owner of Beammeuptemi based out of Hialeah Lakes, but I operate everywhere in Florida. To see my art on a persons face and see how happy they are with the results, I literally “don’t care where I go as long as I get paid”.
According to my clients, what sets me apart from others will be the passion I have for my craft. When clients compliment my work, they don’t just stop at how amazing the final result is, they compliment my discipline and devotion, and my creativity and how they can perceive the passion in everything I do. They are not wrong.
I’ll say, I’m very in tune with the art of makeup. Although, I love when money is involved but most importantly makeup has always kept me sane. My passion for this craft is deep, personal and intentional. I think that’s what sets me apart the most. I am very intentional and passionate about makeup.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I’m still on the journey of growing my clientele, so this is definitely still a learning process for me. However, I’ll share some tips that has helped me thus far.
First, if you are anything like me, sharpen your social skills. I’m an introvert but I’ve had to learn to be comfortable with talking to people and going to social events. If you are in the beauty industry, it’s inevitable. You’ll have to get out of your shell every now and then. It might feel a little overwhelming, especially in a city like miami with such fast culture, but to grow in any professional setting you have to be able to adapt and adjust. In my case, I’ve had to adapt to the miami culture and adjust to being social when I need to.
Two, don’t be shy/embarrassed to talk about your hustle.(no matter how small your business is). Of course, don’t be that person who doesn’t have an identity outside their hustle but whenever you get the chance, plug yourself in.
Although social media give you a great platform to promote yourself, but nothing beats a live opportunity to pitch yourself as long as you stay ready. You really get to sell your business exactly how you want the client to perceive you. That’s P(romo)
Three, Don’t let people lie to you that business cards aren’t effective, they are. Keep those with you at all time. Pass them out when you get the opportunity to and even place them at the most random places—— gas stations, front desks, bars, lounges etc. Not everyone keeps them, but a good number of people will use those to get in contact with you or even give it to a friend who might need it. It will never go out of style, at least not anytime soon.
Four, Social media. Use your social media platforms. Make those reels, even if you get just 30 views and 2 likes, don’t be discouraged, make another one. Sometimes you could get thousands of views and likes and not get a single client from a post but get 3 clients with just 30 views. Track you insights on your professional accounts! Pay for instagram and Facebook ads! Make those tiktoks. Social media is a great tool, use it to its fullest capacity.
Lastly,, be professional! Nothing beats being good at what you do and actually being professional. Professionalism isn’t as hectic as people make it seem. For beauty service providers, you just have to me well mannered and polite. No matter how ridiculous clients get, keep it cute and handle the situation like a boss. People will try to get you out of character but it’s important to be able to seperate your personal identity/emotions from your business.
When people don’t have nothing ill to say about their experience with you and you actually do great work, then you win. That’s how they tell people about you. The best way to attract clients is through referrals. The best way to get referrals is to have good energy and be professional with your clients. Of course we can’t be perfect all the time because we are human, but once you become more intentional about providing top notch professional service, you are laying a really nice bed to lay on later.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I enjoy reading self improvement books, blogs, Ted talks etc. Here are some list of books that I’ve read in the past year that has drastically improved my mindset.
First one is , Master by Robert Greene. I know he is a controversial author but this booked has shaped my perspective as an entrepreneur. I don’t agree with everything he says but I have taken a couple of pointers from this specific book and used as a guide on how to show up in my entrepreneurial journey and so far it works for me.
Another good read for me is “how to talk to anyone” by Leil Lowndes. i am currently re-reading this actually—- re- sharpening my social skills. Definitely a good read for how to be social if that’s something you struggle with.
Lastly, The 4 agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I love this book so much because it’s so simple and straight to the point but has such a big effect on who I am as a person. I refer to this book when im starting to lose balance. It keeps me grounded as a person. It’s a holy grail. Simple but impactful.
I struggle with being consistent with reading self improvement books but of all the books I’ve read, these 3 books serve as a guide for me.
