Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Telece Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Telece, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think what determines who will end up a success in this life or not is a person’s resilience and perseverance. It’s not failure or the lack there of that determines whether someone is successful or not, it’s the ability to keep going even when you do fail. If you keep going there is no way you can be a failure because you are always trying, therefore you are always striving for success. And if you are in the process of reaching your goal, you are always in the process of reaching success. Fail 100 times, so you can have the opportunity to try 101 times. That’s what it takes to be successful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had an entrepreneur spirit, but I for a while wasn’t sure how I would be able to utilize my desire to be an entrepreneur.
Throughout college I served tables to make some extra money for college expenses. While serving I was able to get a firsthand account on how fun it looked to bartend. That’s when I knew I had to be behind the bar!
Becoming a bartender did not come easy to me at first. I discovered in the restaurant industry being promoted from server to bartender was often a game of luck and politics and getting the managers to believe in you and your skills and that you can be a great fit behind the bar.
After constantly getting passed up to be trained as a bartender at the restaurants I was working at, my time working in the restaurant industry was coming to a close, as I graduated college and received my first job or “big girl job” as we called it at the restaurant I served at within a corporate environment. Even though my focus shifted to climbing up the corporate ladder I always had Bartending in my heart, and knew it was a good idea to always have that skill as back up if corporate didn’t work out.
I decided to invest in myself and take classes at the Nashville Bartending School, and officially obtain my license as a Bartender.
After becoming licensed, I knew that I wanted to use it to start my own Bartending business. I had the motivation telling myself if my previous manager didn’t believe in me to train me as a bartender, I was going to believe in myself and bartend for my own company!
Throughout my years working in a corporate environment after receiving my license, I began to Bartend occasional parties on the side with different promoters around the city. However I still had not established my own brand just yet.
Cut to March 2020, when everything hit the fan during the pandemic, after working in the corporate field for almost a decade climbing up the ladder from entry level to a leadership position I unfortunately was laid off.
Once I picked myself up again after taking that ego and career hit, I realized this was the perfect opportunity to seriously develop and execute the vision I had years ago, and officially start my own Bartending company.
Bossy Bar Babes was officially born in the Spring/Summer of 2021. For my birthday in May I decided to gift myself by obtaining my LLC and making Bossy Bar Babes an official corporation.
Bossy Bar Babes is a mobile Bartending Company that specializes in providing professional Bartending services for events including but not limited to Birthday Parties, Weddings, Corporate Events, Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties, etc.
Bossy Bar Babes also offers “Drop-Off Bars” for those wanting to have their own private party at home with them a few friends, family or significant other where a Mobile bar will be delivered without having an event Bartender present, so you and your guests can serve themselves.
The thing that sets Bossy Bar Babes apart is that I make my own cocktail mixers that are included in my drinks in order to cut down on added chemicals, preservatives, and unnecessary added sugars to make sure your cocktail is if the highest quality.
Bossy Bar Babes takes extra time to use fresh fruit and boil it down to create a fresh fruit based mixer for your cocktail. It may be a lot of extra work, but it is worth it to give my consumers quality, and I’m very proud of that!
I also am big into my spiritual faith, which tells me that Alcohol if consumed irresponsibility, can lower your spiritual vibration, making you more susceptible to decreasing your mental and spiritual health. Therefore in every cocktail created by Bossy Bar Babes, the intention of love, and positive vibrations are put into the cocktail to ensure that only positive vibrations are given off when consuming a Bossy Bar Babes Cocktail.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that the traditional path to success was the only way and entrepreneurship was not for me. Like most my age and older I was taught to go to school, get good grades, get a good job and make good money to live a comfortable life. If I did those things I would be deemed a success in life when I reached my golden years. However actually living life in this current society has taught me differently. I accomplished the traditional path of going to college, getting good grades, and landing a nice stable comfortable job. However after a few years I felt stagnant. I felt like I was supposed to be doing more. It took seeing a co worker retire from the company I was working at after being there for 40+ years for me to really realize that even though there is nothing wrong with retiring at a company, in fact that is considered a big accomplishment to be proud of, but that wasn’t the only thing I saw for my life specifically. I knew I wanted to try my hand at owning a business of my own, whether that be in addition to my corporate job or as a full time entrepreneur. Shifting my mindset to knowing that I can be a successful entrepreneur on my own is what encouraged me to go ahead and enter my hat into the ring of entrepreneurship. It took me unlearning what society taught me about the traditional path of success to go ahead and make take that leap of faith in starting my own business.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time where I had to pivot in life is probably a time where a lot had to do a similar pivot, the pandemic. 2020 was a difficult year for a lot of people, and I was no exception. Within a year I had decided to quit a very stable job I had already been at almost 5 years and take a leap of faith for a higher level position at another company, just for a pandemic to occur causing me to get laid off. At that time I had been working since I was 15, and I was now jobless. This gave me the kick I needed, however, to do what I had been talking about doing for years, and that was making that pivot from a corporate employee to starting my own business becoming an entrepreneur. Going from corporate life to entrepreneur life taught me so much, such as everything for your business falls on you and only you as a solo entrepreneur. It’s your discipline, dedication, drive, and perseverance that determine if your business will be a success or not, not someone else. However, like I stated earlier the only way to become unsuccessful as an entrepreneur is to stop trying. As long as I kept trying, even though at times I felt and still feel like I have no clue what I’m doing, I know I am a success story. My success story might not be ready to be told now, but it’s definitely still being written. That’s what was able to allow me to make the needed pivot to survive through the pandemic.
