We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Teja Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Teja below.
Teja, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
We have a special niche in what we do. Most people are always searching for a social media expert, but we specifically help foundations, and organizations and speak to a certain audience for matters that are shaping our country on many levels.

Teja, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Get Social With Teja is a social media agency that I built to create a safe space for women of color working in social justice and political advocacy. We specialize in Black and brown empowerment that affects communities of color and issues that affect us. Most recently, we helped Rock The Vote register over 2 million voters in the 2020 election through social media and facilitated getting Kamala Harris as our first women of color Vice President with She The People. There are tons of social media agencies around that know how to post on Instagram, here at Get Social, we know how to use Instagram for activists and getting things that matter to people. We help foundations, organizations and companies build their brands while staying true to their mission but relevant to what is going on around us. Women of color are the ones to best tell these stories, too often I see a page for Black and brown people run by a white person. There is no better way to tell our stories than from us and women of color are affected by most issues that are important to us.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m actually going through this right now. I currently have an 8-week-old son and trying to balance everything going on in the news and tend to my maternity leave has been a struggle. I want to be as present as possible but when everything I’ve fought for in my career is being ruined right before my eyes it’s been hard for me to concentrate. When you have passion for what you do business and personal matters sometimes mesh together and it’s not easy to separate!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My favorite saying is the proof is in the work. I have always let my work speak for its self and its why I have never paid for an ad or put any advertising out of my business.
