Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tegan Smith-Cowan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Tegan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Baking for me started years ago… bringing into fruition started in 2019. I have a creative spirit by nature and baking for me served as another outlet to follow that passion. Through flour, extracts, and eggs I became addicted to the processes, the science, the lows of a bad bake and highs of what happens when you follow the exact directions and when you decide to change a recipe for it to become your own and it comes out amazing! While I was often told that this definitely could be a successful business for me it wasn’t until the pandemic hit when I decided to pursue this as a career. I was working remotely while trying to manage my daughters school schedules. Out of faith ( and a little fustration) I decided to bet on myself. I have always had the support of my family and friends to go and take the risk and was told that the worst thing that could happen is that I don’t try. Hey Batta Batta Sweets grew from love, support, and motivation. Being a small business owner, I’ve learned more things about myself then ever before. Through my strength and short comings, I am learning the power of delegating and automating, taking losses as lessons, and reminding myself that the journey is just as exciting as the destination.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into this industry as an outlet to explore my creativity and my love for baking. Hey Batta Batta Sweets offers a variety of baked goods that includes cupcakes, cookies, and cheesecakes. I am the solution for someone who wants something that’s decadent and delicious but does not have the time ( or doesn’t want to) spend hours in the kitchen baking for their special events . I am proud to say that I enjoy baking delectable treats and get excited by the feedback on how everything was amazing or what I can do to improve.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I am still working on building my audience on social media. I am still learning how to navigate creating and posting content. I know one thing that has helped me gain followers was being featured on the news. Being active on social media is something that definitely causes for discipline and my advice is If you know it’s not your strong point, figure out a way to automate/delegate this task and if your business is not bringing the income where you can afford to do this consider bartering services with other entrepreneurs in your area.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Best source of new clients has been participating in Markets. It is here where you are face to face with people are looking to support small business and willing to try new things. Craft markets and fairs provide the best both worlds. You get to network with other small business owners, meet individuals who are willing to support and it also provides research and development. Have a new product or service you test out? Try it at a Craft Fair or Market.
