We recently connected with Teflon Quan and have shared our conversation below.
Teflon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment I’ve ever made was believing in myself. Believing in my passion & skills has gotten me past obstacles I’ve never anticipated. “Invest In Yourself” is not only the Soufside Mafia’s motto, it’s our way of life. Early in my career, I learned that nobody is willing to support somebody who don’t show a commitment to self-investments. I would post content & promote my art to friends, family, & associates hoping for support that I honestly wasn’t working for. At the time, I was also mourning the loss of 2 brothers & my mentor Omar Phillips. So there were many days I questioned my own commitment & had thoughts of quitting this path to pursue others. Getting nonchalant responses or no response at all helped me realize I had to be my biggest supporter & critic. I realized that “Invest In Yourself” requires a healthy balance of time, money, & passion to show the commitment I have to reach my goals. Once I began to use every moment more wisely, I saw better opportunities. There were opportunities to make more music, connect with the culture, & I better appreciated any effort towards my career from myself or others. My limitless potential was finally revealed.
Teflon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born & raised in Atlanta, GA, Jaquan Price, better known as Teflon Quan, is an American rapper. He was raised in the southwest area of Atlanta, GA where he found an interest in music at a very young age. He began learning how to play multiple instruments & produce beats alongside family & friends, which led him deeper into the musical culture of Hip-Hop. One inspiration for his career was actually two separate moments someone attempted to steal artwork he produced. These moments opposed the doubts he had of his abilities & sparked a flame that’s turned into a raging blaze. Surprisingly, his first inspiration to begin this journey was the discovery of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Their creativity opened his mind to new styles & sounds & ultimately helped him find his own. Combining smooth melodies on tracks like ‘Cold World’ with banging Trap 808s on tracks like ‘Back Up’ , Teflon Quan provides a wide variety of Hip-Hop & Rhythmic sounds for his listeners. As of today, he has released two solo projects (All It Takes Is Patience & Enjoy The Ride), 10 singles (including ‘Back Up’, ‘Show & Tell’ & more) , & is featured on multiple tracks from various artists. Quan can be defined as a “self-reflection artist”. His music is created in the image of self-doubt & self-motivation to create a balanced environment of constructive criticism & praise for his listeners. It’s created by/for the person who seems to always feel left out & forgotten. I encourage new listeners to focus on the subtle wordplay & let the various rhythmic flows take you into a space of euphoria. As a new listener, you should know Teflon Quan’s music is written as a guide into one’s own soul. His new & upcoming projects serve the purpose of self-motivation & determination to follow the Soufside Mafia motto. INVEST IN YOURSELF.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Throughout my artistic journey, my main goal is to change the world’s view on life in Atlanta. I think most people don’t take life as serious as they should, yet there are a few who make it too serious. There should be an even balance of hard work & soothing relaxation to create opportunities for all of us to seize every moment to its fullest. I don’t think I know everything but I do realize I will always be in a learning stage at every stage of life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is hearing how my music helped someone through tough times. Most of my music is written as guidelines & reminders to help myself through tough times. When you are listening to it, keep an open heart & a strong mind to know that no matter the obstacles, failures, or successes you face, the journey will always be more important than the destination.
