We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Teeya Skipper. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Teeya below.
Teeya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
There are so many ways that Artist/creatives are misunderstood. I’d literally be writing a book here trying to explain.
However the way that I am misunderstood is that people think that what matter’s to them about “me” matters to me and it doesn’t. Most people are nervous to talk to me or shocked when I respond to their DM’s because they’re expecting me to not be as accessible as they perceived I would be. It surprises people that im human, humble, kind, simple and Introverted.
Most people think that because I have extroverted gifts that I enjoy being around people all the time. But I don’t. I feel the most relaxed when im by myself.
They also don’t think Im shy…but I am. Most times being around people still feels like work. Because I have to be mindful of my energy, “resting B Face” and Conversation. Sometimes I don’t want to talk and it’s hard being around others when you want to be quiet.
They may think something is wrong or that they did something wrong and that might not be the case. I also don’t want to explain every 5 mins that im really ok lol. So sometimes my answer is im just tired. And its an honest answer because not enough alone time does make me easily tired around certain people.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Teeya Skipper but known as “Thee Teeya Skipper” I am a singer/songwriter, Creative, Encourager, Entrepreneur and just all around Expressionist. I have my own Piercing Care line called, “Skippers Sweet Cheek’s” this came about because of my cheek piercings which is one of the hardest piercings to heal. so I give advice and provide the products I use to take care of them.
I’ve always been good with my hands so making jewelry, candles and designing “thrift store” finds are some of my favorite things to do. However when it comes to what Im known most for I would say it’s my words….My writing!
Ive been writing, performing and curating since I was a child. Writing plays, scripts, poetry, captain of dance Teams etc… Ive always been creative and expressive through the arts.
Writing was my first introduction into my feelings and knowing what I felt. Writing helped me to process my emotions and the pain I felt from being different and rejected.
I started performing my own music at open mics when I was 16/17 and when I went away to school (Central State University) Thats when my music really started to take off.
I was known for my unique sound, and heart felt songs.
The reason why people connect to my music and my messages so much is because I talk about life and matters of the heart!
Ive always been told that I helped people to say what they felt inside but didn’t have the words to articulate. Popular songs I’ve written like, Superficial, I Love Me and Watering have become staples in peoples life. My music helps people to feel seen and to know that they’re not alone.
What I want people to know about my Music is that it’s Medicinal! It’s literally been prescribed for people struggling with self love, anxiety, a Broken heart or just feeling lost in life.
Whenever I’m writing about a problem Im having I also write the solution. Which helps other to know what to do if they’re having that same problem im singing about.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Expression Drives my Creative Journey! Expressing myself feels like breathing… writing my feelings and how I see the world is how I feel heard. I make jewelry, candles, Art … all these things feel meditative to/for me.
I know what its like to not feel heard! That’s how I became a writer. Writing my feelings down on paper because I didn’t think anyone cared. But once I turned them into music, into poetry into Melody’s that’s when people started listening.
I want to help people who don’t feel heard or seen. Those who struggle with their mental health, self love and self acceptance. I want to give people music they can “Live” to, not just listen to. I want to give people hope! The hope and Encouragement I wish I had.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a creative is being able to bring things to life. To have a vision and know exactly what it’ll take to bring it about. I love that I can see the Potential and beauty in a thing before it’s even transformed. I never see things as a waste. Which is why it’s also hard to throw away things lol. But I can find purpose in anything. Thats the beauty of being a creative. I always have what I need and even if I don’t I can create it!
