We were lucky to catch up with Teddy Love recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Teddy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Practice and a lot of YouTube videos, When I first started I would often try to mimic other photographers in the way they shoot their pictures, Eventually I learned to shoot my own style. I think what could’ve sped up my learning process is always being consistent and always bring your camera wherever you go. The skills that were most essential is always trusting your vision and knowing your subject. Whether it’s a seasoned model or a city skyline, have a vision! As a creative speaking the only obstacle that stood in my way of learning was me, at times we creatives tend to overthink and block ourselves from doing more.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I want to give a big shoutout to CanvasRebel / Voyage for having me again, It’s greatly appreciated. I’m Demetrius aka Teddy Love, I’m a Houston photographer & creative director. To be completely honest, I kind of fell into the industry around high school when I start promoting a club called Hush. I would walk around the school handing out flyers for the event, eventually I was given my first camera, a Sony Cyber Shot. When I tell you I took this camera everywhere, I know my friends were getting annoyed with all the pictures I was taking, but I didn’t care, I fell in love with the art of photography. Fast Forward to 2021 I got my LLC for my brand TeddyLovesVisuals. Now don’t get me wrong It’s not as easy as it looks, I’ve had obstacles and challenges thrown my way, but when you’re dedicated to something that you love you will never give up. As far as products, I have stickers, T-shirts, and much more coming I’ve actually been working on a custom ski mask, the idea was for a photoshoot but turned into a side hobby. My services are open to anything, I’ve shot a bit of everything so far and If I haven’t, I’m always willing to learn. I have clients come to me and are afraid to take pictures because simply a lot of people are camera shy, at TeddyLovesVisuals I will do my very best to make the client feel relaxed and comfortable as possible. That is one of the things that set me apart from other photographers, I want to reach my clients on a personal level. I want to bring the confidence out when I’m shooting a client, I strive to get the best quality. I’m always looking for more clients/models/friends to work with. The thing I’m most proud about is being recognized for the art I create.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to be a full-time photographer and eventually open my own studio. I would love to travel the world doing photography as well!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love to create, just making something out of nothing really puts me on cloud 9. Having peers and clients hype you up for the art I’m creating. That’s probably the most rewarding to me.
