We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tearra Arrington. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tearra below.
Tearra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
About six years ago, I was going through some things in life. I was experiencing a lot of emotions about past relationships. Both professional and romantic. And started to write down my thoughts on a piece of paper.
In August of 2016, I took those thoughts and gathered a small group of people closest to me to participate in a round table discussion.
From the discussion, the idea of having this segment air on local television was tossed around. We pursued the idea but were not able to go through with it because of lack of help, funds or experience.
In August of 2017, the round table discussion took new life when I had the idea to produce a short film. So I began to write. I had no prior experience with script writing.
Once the script was completed, I took a huge leap of faith when I asked a friend from college, who never had experience with videography to be the director of photography for the project.
None of us knew what we were doing, but all of us were committed to the vision.
Fast forward to production. Every person except that friend that I asked for help, failed me. I was left with tons of footage but no one to edit it.
I had no experience what so ever with editing but decided that I was going to be the one to put the pieces together. I completed the editing process I’m August of 2018.
Due to stress from anything and everything failing during the process, I was overwhelmed with emotion and I also was not happy with the finished project because it didn’t come together as I had envisioned it.
For this reason I held on to the project for a year with no intention on ever letting anyone see it. Until November of 2019, when a close friend who was also a part of the cast talked me into letting her see it.
When she saw it she was blown away. In a good way. And not wanting to let my cast down because they had worked so hard, I decided in December of 2019 to release the film to the world.
It was received so much better than I ever imagined it would be. The people saw my vision and felt my pain. And I was happy.
Fast forward to December of 2022, I am now gearing up to premiere part 2 of that same film franchise because my audience wanted, and needed more.
If I never took the risk, I wouldn’t now be here ready to deliver my vision exactly the way I saw it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I currently work a full time job with Truist Life Insurance Services as a Marketing Communications Specialist. I have been in this role for about four years.
I have always had a passion for marketing, and upon graduating from college in 2015 from Shippensburg University, I started a blog called “Comic Sauce.”
The blog was really the first of its kind then. Promoting all things positive and uplifting its readers. Garnering attention very quickly from some well known celebrities. Lil Kim. Kevin Gates, Sinbad, Jennifer Lewis, just to name a few.
When I brought my own camera following the first Vicious Cycles film, is when my passion for media production came into play.
I now, due to my background, offer various media and marketing services to small businesses.
I create promo videos, help with branding strategies, dabble in product photography, produce press kits etc.. Really anything that helps a small business market and brand themselves, I do.
I think what sets me aside from other companies is that I really eat, sleep, and breathe marketing. It’s my passion, so I am always excited to help my clients take their brand to the next level and bring what ever vision they may have to life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the greatest lessons that I had to unlearn was, letting other people have control of my vision and being so trusting that they would be able produce the vision the way that I saw it.
With the Vicious Cycles film I trusted so many people in areas that they claimed to have expertise and was very let down when they couldn’t deliver it the way I saw it.
So following the premiere of the first film, I took at least a year of time where I studied everything related to film.
During that time I also invested in quality equipment that would enable me to produce the vision that I saw.
Because of this the second film’s production team’s credits read, “Tearra Arrington” for every role. Lol
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding is always the most important when it comes to a business and is often the hardest to obtain.
All of the funding for my business really comes from my own pockets. My 9 to 5 is funding my dream. I put everything I have into my business because I believe in it. And hopefully one day that inspires an investor to believe in me too.
