We recently connected with Teale Hatheway and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Teale thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
One of the most exhilarating trends we’re observing in the interior design industry is the non-trend: the bold embrace of individuality and self-expression. This non-trend champions personal style and invites everyone to express themselves in their living spaces. Wallpaper and luxurious drapery with lively patterns and colors have become the visual equivalents of large-scale art, transforming plain rooms into cocoons that tell a story or evoke a mood.
A story that perfectly captures this trend? Recently, a client approached us wanting to infuse her home with high-vibe energy. Unhindered by the pressure of neutral trends, she was drawn to wallpapers that were colorful, with bold, expressive patterns. We chose our Morris wallpaper that features a large, abstract, floral-meets-architecture design with vibrant magentas and soothing turquoises, paired with apricot and white linen drapes that softened the room and provided a visual counterpoint. The effect was transformative—the walls became a statement piece, reflecting her vibrant personality and creating a space that felt uniquely hers while the light colored draperies created a visual counterpoint and diffused light as it entered the room. The result was a highly individualized space that made our client feel good when she entered it. Success!
This trend towards personalization in design is not without its challenges. The key concern is achieving balance—ensuring that these bold choices do not overwhelm our clients but rather enhance their experiences. However, the opportunity it presents is far greater, encouraging an unprecedented level of personal expression within interior design. Each choice becomes a reflection of individual style and a celebration of uniqueness.
This movement towards more expressive design choices is a refreshing shift from the more neutral palettes or cookie-cutter styles that dominated previous decades. It’s about more than just aesthetics; it’s about creating spaces that truly feel like home. By embracing this non-trend, we are not just designing spaces; we are curating experiences and building environments that inspire and comfort. This is the essence of modern interior design—bold, expressive, and deeply personal.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Teale Hatheway, the founder of Pearl & Maude Home, a design atelier in Los Angeles. We’re a studio where creativity meets craftsmanship in the realm of bespoke wallpaper, fabrics, and home décor. As a fifth-generation Angeleno, I have a deep-rooted connection to Southern California’s architectural heritage, which inspires every pattern we create. Each design begins as one of my architectural artworks, meticulously transformed into rhythmic patterns that blend contemporary exuberance with a traditional point of view.
Coming from a family of interior designers, I have a keen understanding of the value of good design. This unique background has equipped me to appreciate the intricacies of creating products that not only look beautiful but endure. At Pearl & Maude, we pride ourselves on our in-house manufacturing process, using sustainable practices and GREENGUARD Gold certified inks to ensure our creations are environmentally responsible and of the highest quality.
Our design process is open-minded and customization-friendly, allowing us to meet the unique needs and desires of our clients, whether for residential or commercial spaces. We create more than just products; we create experiences, setting the stage for memories in spaces designed to reflect the individuality of their occupants.
At Pearl & Maude, we are committed to redefining the timeless spirit of West Coast design, merging vibrant creativity with serene escapism. My journey and the legacy of my family drive our mission to provide exceptional, soulful designs that are the backdrop to life’s most cherished moments.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
At Pearl & Maude, we take great pride in manufacturing our wallpapers right here in our Los Angeles studio. The journey to manufacturing our own products was both challenging and exhilarating. Initially, I didn’t have direct experience in the manufacturing side of decorative arts. My background in painting and installation art provided a strong foundation in building and aesthetics, but transitioning those designs into repeatable production was a new frontier.
When I first envisioned transforming my architectural artworks into wallpaper, the task of finding the right way to produce it was a slow process. After working with various manufacturers for a period of time, I decided that in-house production would give us the greatest control over the quality of our products. This also appeals to my artistic side which is accustomed to having tools at my finger tips without a middle man interpreting my art. This decision led us down the path of digital printing—a method that aligns with our values of environmental responsibility and allows for the flexibility needed in custom designs.
We invested in digital printing technology, specifically choosing equipment that supported GREENGUARD Gold certified inks, to ensure low emissions and a healthier environment. Learning to operate this technology efficiently was a steep learning curve, but it was crucial for maintaining the high standards we set for our products.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through this process is the importance of flexibility and precision in manufacturing. Each roll of wallpaper must be meticulously matched for pattern repeats, requiring a keen eye and patience. Another lesson is the significance of sustainable practices. By printing to order, we minimize waste and ensure that each piece we produce is intentional and personalized.
Manufacturing our products in-house has not only allowed us to maintain high-quality standards but also to stay closely connected to the entire creation process, from design concept to the final product. It places our relationships with clients ahead of our relationships with external vendors – a situation that’s significantly more fun for everyone involved. This hands-on approach ensures that every roll of Pearl & Maude wallpaper reflects the passion and creativity that is at the heart of our brand.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele at Pearl & Maude has been building personal relationships through open studios, in-person events, and networking. In the design world, where details matter, connecting personally with those who share a passion for adventurous design has proven invaluable.
Networking extends beyond casual interactions; it includes active participation in professional memberships, clubs, and architectural organizations. This involvement allows us to stay connected with the latest discussions in design and provides additional platforms for meeting like-minded professionals and enthusiasts.
By hosting open studios, we invite potential clients into our creative space, allowing them to experience the artistry behind every Pearl & Maude design. This approach builds trust and camaraderie, transforming visitors into loyal clients and friends.
These personal connections not only fuel our growth but also ensure that our journey is surrounded by supporters who appreciate our brand’s unique ethos. Through these networks, we create a community that supports and inspires one another, driving collective success.
