We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Teaira Abston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Teaira thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
As a business owner you’re always taking risks in order to elevate. A prime example was when I decided to pivot my business to a completely new audience. I had previously been a stationer that served the wedding and events industry for about 5 years and felt as though something was missing. I had become a little burned out and I thought that maybe entrepreneurship wasn’t for me.
Not really knowing where to go next, I decided to start showing some past logo design work that I had done for friends and family. People began to show interest and before I knew it, I had a waiting list of clients. Even though I felt like I was learning as I go, there was transferable knowledge from my past experience that I applied to the new business. Those skills allowed me to push past fear, doubts, and uncertainty to keep going. Overtime I developed more confidence in the new venture and other people took notice. Without taking that risk, I probably would have not made the connections that I have today. I also would have gone back to Corporate America because it seemed like the easy route.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Teaira Abston, the owner of Dreamcatcher Creative Studio, which is a branding, design, and consulting agency that specializes in helping businesses elevate their brands using strategy and design. In other words, we help business owners create a strategic plan and provide you with the visual assets–such as logos, marketing material, and a website–you need to reach their business goals.
Dreamcatcher Creative Studio is not your average design company. We strive to ensure we provide you with the highest quality of work. This means, we learn your brand inside and out by fully understanding who you are as a person and where you want to take your business.
By understanding your goals, we’re able to make a strategic plan to support it. Dreamcatcher Creative Studio does more than just create logos, WE BUILD BRANDS. As a result, clients walk away more confident in their brand and excited to showcase their expertise.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
We absolutely love our clients and throughout the process of developing their brands we build an amazing relationship! A lot of times we become so heavily invested in our client’s success that we go above and beyond to ensure they have what they need to manage their brand.
We pride ourselves on having superior customer service! Systems such as Dubsado and Slack allow us to not only effectively communicate throughout the process, but also enhance accountability on both sides.
Once the initial work is complete, we nurture the relationship by checking in to see how things are going and offering up additional support. For us, it’s all about becoming their cheerleaders and reminding them how to best utilize their assets. Education has been one of the main things we use to develop brand loyalty. We always strive to provide value in our social media content, newsletters, etc.
As of recently, we’ve created a loyalty program for past clients who refer us to others. It’s been a big hit and has allowed them to see just how appreciative we are for their support!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Most people don’t know this, but I left my corporate job two times to pursue full time entrepreneurship. The very first time was completely planned out. I had saved a significant amount of money and prayed on it for months.
Although I was nervous I took the leap anyway. Shortly after I left my job, I went through a lot of life transitions, such as the birth of my daughter and the loss of my father. Although that year was supposed to be “the year” of success in my business, it ended up being the year of change in life.
After going through that rough patch, I went back to Corporate America thinking that entrepreneurship was over. Soon after, the world shutdown due to COVID and I was able to further explore my passion for creativity. From there I began showcasing a range of design projects and realized I was meant to serve in other ways. I just needed time to gain clarity and direction.
I’m happy to report that a year later I was able to take the leap into full time entrepreneurship again! It turns out that if I would have completely given up on business, I would have never been able to help so many small business owners develop professional brands.
