Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tayo Ishola. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tayo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe success comes at different stages of life and in different measures. If one’s vision is achieved, irrespective of what that looks like when measured against societal standards, I think that is success!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the fashion industry through pageantry in my early teens. At the same time, I enrolled into a apprenticeship program that showed me the back-end of garment construction and design. In 2015, I started a swim and resort wear brand called Eido Swimwear, and it soon became a life-giving brand that focuses on creating avenues for impactful conversations to solve global issues. The brand just had a relaunch at Miami Swim Week in July, and it is now called “I Am Eido.”
Any advice for managing a team?
I think it is really important to understand that business is about people, and the first sets of people to nurture are the members of one’s team. I think to successfully manage teams, one must know the strengths and weaknesses of each team-member, harness the strengths so that they override the weaknesses. Also, making everyone feel that they have ownership in the progress of the vision helps to maintain high morale.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think one of the times I had to pivot in business was when the 2020 pandemic hit the world. For a business that requires in-person interaction, it did come with many challenges during that season, but I was able to learn the need for purposeful use of the internet space to maintain connection and to build beyond the limitations of social distance.
