We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taylor Tuckson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Taylor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I would love my legacy to be one that brings warmth and peace. When i’m creating a video I am hoping that the person on the other side watching the will feel a sense of comfort and have a desire to come back and feel the same warmth all over again. I want to be remembered as someone who is intentional about what I film and to inspire others to capture their own memories. Because In the end that’s all we’ll be left with.
Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was homeschooled and spent a lot of my time outside making videos and teaching myself to tumbling. I would play around with different filters and effects, then I’d run inside to show my mom what I filmed once i was finished.
As I got closer to graduating I was uncertain of what I wanted to do in life. I never wanted to punch someone’s clock everyday doing something I wasn’t passionate about. But not knowing then that videography could be a career, I chose barbering school.
I worked in a barbershop for 3 years leading up to Covid. I eventually quit and shortly after I met someone in the film industry. I worked with them doing corporate job and non profit events until I helped second shoot for a wedding in 2021. I fell in love with it. I ended up leaving the the film company i was in about a year later and pursued wedding filmmaking. I started out doing weddings Pro bono until i built enough experience to charge reasonable prices. I am now 2 1/2 years into my career as a wedding filmmaker and it’s been great!
My dream is to be a film director/cinematographer making movies and tv shows. I love that wedding filmmaking gives me the freedom to create in the way i envision.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that there is no right or wrong way in filmmaking. The previous company i was in gave a structured way of how every film must go. No that i have more creative power I see that doing whatever YOU think looks beautiful is art. There is no right or wrong way. I’m glad I learned that and i hope that anyone starting out understands how important this is.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media. Tiktok and Instagram are the platforms that i’m found on. Posting consistently helps a lot and responding quickly when you’ve received an inquire.
