We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Tomanka. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Since 2014, my law practice has focused around the family unit, practicing family & probate law as well as providing estate planning services. My practice has given me the opportunity to work with and help a lot of women in particular during some of the worst moments in their lives. But, after 7+ years the emotional toll and labor I’ve seen on women especially was getting to be too much.
In my practice, I did a LOT of divorces and child custody cases. I saw a LOT of moms struggle to make enough money to feed their kids every day and keep clothes on their backs. Many of them had several jobs and side hustles to make ends meet. They certainly did not have the resources to hire a business attorney to help them set up, protect and scale their side gig into a livable income for their family.
I knew I could help women quit their 9-5, J.O.B. to pursue their passion project full time without talking down to them, without having them fork over a huge upfront retainer and without the old, antiquated way of legal thinking that wasn’t benefiting them.
I wanted to build something that empowered and built women up, rather than tore them down because when you empower one woman to make her own money, you don’t only empower the individual woman. She ends up empowering and improving the lives of her family, her community, her business and industry and ultimately, the world.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve never really been one to follow the rules and I don’t believe that anyone should do something just because that’s “how it’s always been done.” I took this into account in creating Taylor the Attorney, and in doing so created an online legal platform designed to help female creative entrepreneurs legally protect and scale their business so that they can quit their 9-5, J.O.B. to pursue their passion project.
I ensure that my legal advice, support, educational trainings, services + products are three (3) things: Accessible, Actionable + Approachable. Three things that don’t really come with your traditional brick-and-mortar law firms.
I don’t think that speaking in “legalese,” using legal jargon, or in a condescending tone helps clients understand legal implications and processes and, ultimately, that’s my goal. My approach to communicating with clients is to speak with you in a much less formal manner than your average attorney – more like a friend (a friend with both a J.D. and an M.B.A., but still – a friend!).
All communications, self-study courses, Done-In-A-Day Services, workshops & training are done online. Meaning that you can legally protect and scale your business without ever leaving the house or wasting any time in traffic.
I intentionally created my products and services on a spectrum – on one hand, you can access legal templates 24/7 in the DIY Legal Template Bar for a do-it-yourself experience and on the other, you can fully outsource legal tasks to Taylor the Attorney utilizing our VIP Days and our monthly legal subscription (and so much more in between).
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
First, because accessibility is one of my core values, all communications, self-study courses, instructional videos, Done-In-A-Day Services, workshops & training are done online. Meaning that you can legally protect and scale your business without ever leaving the house or wasting any time in traffic.
In addition, everything (with the exception of Done-In-A-Days) is available online. So it doesn’t matter if you’re working on your business at 11 a.m. or 11 p.m. – its all there ready for you 24/7.
Secondly, since my subscription clients choose the monthly subscription service to gain access to the attorney at all times, they are privy to extended communications:
—Every Wednesday for 5 hours, I open up my cell phone to my clients to text/audio message for Office Hours via Voxer. They are able to ask me about their legal issue and get a solution within minutes.
—These clients are also able to schedule a once a month phone call with the attorney, depending on the level of service.
—These clients have a certain amount of legal document reviews per year/month, depending on the level of service.
—Group Q+As & Quarterly Workshops are two other popular ways that I communicate with these clients.
I also send out a monthly newsletter to subscribers and am frequently on Instagram asking how I can better communicate and help my clients.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I fell in love with helping women through family law in 2013 and I continued on after law school to practice family law for seven (7) years. While I found it fulfilling helping women through difficult times in their lives, the problems within our family law system began to drain me emotionally – making it not worth it anymore.
I saw woman after woman screwed by their divorce and/or the system and saw many of them relying on side gigs to make ends meet (along with their other job(s)), but not having the knowledge or money to pay an attorney to help them start their LLC and protect their assets (and their families).
I dedicated a solid 7 years of my life, not only to helping women and children through my legal work at my law firm, but by providing pro bono divorces to women through Legal Aid of Northwest Texas and volunteering for several nonprofits in my community related to the cause. I even became my local Junior League President and had the opportunity to start a homeless program for children in our town. But, literally the year after I left office – so much of it was immediately torn down (local politics) and so much of what I had worked for, was all of a sudden – nothing.
I realized the way I was working wasn’t doing the most-good (like I had thought) for women and children and that I needed to change my tactic.
So, I started my legal business, Taylor the Attorney, to help women protect their business assets and in turn, build confidence, peace of mind and – even better- generational wealth for their families. My key takeaways from working in traditional law firms was that women need legal services that are accessible, approachable and actionable – so that’s exactly what I aim to do.
