We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taylor Tankson Kareem Wallace a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Taylor Tankson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our mission is deeply personal, rooted in a need to have candles that wouldn’t trigger Taylor’s asthma. After making samples we shared them with family and friends and they loved it so much they convinced us to consider a business.
This experience has fueled our unwavering dedication to curating a collection of natural, vegan, and sustainable luxury home essentials. Our commitment lies in providing our community with products that transcend mere aesthetics, focusing instead on prioritizing their well-being and creating spaces of comfort and tranquility that are accessible to all.
Taylor Tankson, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Tribe & Oak is a luxury home essentials brand and e-commerce store specializing in bringing vegan and sustainable luxury home essentials to our community at an accessible price. Our product line includes coconut soy wax candles with wooden wicks, organic whipped moisturizing body butter, reed diffusers with natural rattan reeds, and a hand sanitizer that smells so delicious it doubles as a room spray.
Our co-founder, Taylor, serves as a living testament to our mission. Her personal struggle with asthma and eczema has been the driving force behind our brand. Taylor’s unique perspective and firsthand experience with sensitivities fuel our determination to create products that are not only innovative but also genuinely safe and non-toxic.
What truly makes us stand out is our ability to offer clients a comprehensive solution to their needs. We are not just another brand; we are a brand with a purpose. Our commitment to innovation, safety, and quality ensures that our clients receive products that are not only a joy to use but also align with their desire for safer, more natural alternatives in an often crowded and uncertain market.
We are unique founders as we are full-time business owners and maintain our full time day jobs. We are passionate, dedicated, and hardworkers who want to scale our brand. We have been able to get our products in 10 doors thus far, do some amazing corporate pop ups, work with the Museum of Modern Art in NY by supplying 300 candles to the gift bags of the black arts council 30th anniversary. But our proudest moment has been winning our first grant in a pitch competition that was sponsored by Beyonce’s BeyGood foundation in partnership with Our Village United and Mastercard after the completion of a 12 week business intensive course which has truly elevated us as business owners.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Because we want our business to succeed we are constantly balancing our time. When we learned how to be strategic in what we participate in, and that its ok to “miss out on money,” it has been a true game changer for us.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
