We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taylor Stockard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name Lucky Bone Market was inspired by my families business name when I was a young child. For 30+ years my family has been producing Team Ropings, but when they first began, their business name was “Wishbone Productions”. The Team Roping/Western industry has played a major role in my life and my families. It has taught me respect, selflessness, work ethic, love, passion and it has made me Taylor. So as I was starting my business, I knew that I wanted to use Wishbone and that is where Lucky Bone came from!
Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always wanted to be a business owner but I knew that I needed to work a corporate job first to learn business and to just grow as an individual. When I worked for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, I was involved in every aspect of the business and that is where I learned more about Marketing and Financials. I currently work a full time job as a Marketing Strategist, which has helped me tremendously with my business. But – to truly answer the question I own a Women’s Apparel Boutique that sells blouses, jackets and bottoms to women ages 20 and up! I have been in business for three months currently and I am online only with a few trade shows along the way! When I decided to start Lucky Bone Market I asked myself, “What are you good at, Taylor?”. I knew I was good at selling product to an ideal customer and I actually enjoyed it! Being able to buy the product, execute a marketing strategy, sell to a customer and fulfill the item – that is my passion. I am so proud of Lucky Bone Market and for myself. To anyone who is dreaming of starting a business.. DO IT! If God puts it on your heart, please listen and trust Him along the way!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
To start an online boutique it can cost really as much as you want it to! I wouldn’t say it is cheap but you are able to control your inventory and how much you want to invest. I am a person who does not like to have debt, so since I have a full time job, I had money saved up that I decided to use to fund my business. I decided to have a variety of inventory so it cost me a little more. But after getting your LLC (which cost $300 without a lawyer’s help), you can spend $500 to have a few different styles of inventory!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I saw this question I knew I needed to answer it! Since Lucky Bone Market is only 3 months young I currently do not have a huge social following. Trust me – I tend to compare myself to other boutiques that have a large social following and get discouraged from time to time, but it is OKAY! I have to remind myself that it took years for those brands to build their following and eventually I will be in their shoes too! To reach the goal of gaining new followers I do a few different things: I follow people, I do social giveaways that require them to follow Lucky Bone on social, I post every single day, my friends share my social pages, I hand out business cards with my social handles and I am looking into product ambassadors/influencers! So I am constantly working at growing Lucky Bone Market’s social following but also reminding myself that it doesn’t take 1 million followers to get sales!
