We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Slocum. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
One of the biggest trends that I have witnessed in the photography industry as of late is “Adventure Sessions”- and I love them! This is something that I have started to implement in my own brand to keep things fresh and exciting. Typically I see a lot of photographers, especially those who travel a lot, offer discounts for sessions or weddings at some of the places around the country/world that are on their bucket list. As someone who has somewhat of an aversion to traveling alone, I’ve decided to put my own twist on it and offer discounts at locations that are unique for photo sessions, like a gas station, library, or laundromat. This has kept my creativity flowing, especially through some of the slower business months. My clients really enjoy receiving super unique images from these sessions!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a portrait and wedding photographer based in Northern Colorado and I offer senior photos, couples sessions, and wedding/elopement day coverage! My passion for photography started at a young age, when my dad bought me my first digital camera and I took that thing EVERYWHERE! From there, I joined The Claw Yearbook staff at Arvada West High School and occasionally shot my friends’ senior photos. It very quickly turned into a passion that I wanted to pursue as a career. One thing that sets me apart from others in my industry is my desire to really connect with my clients and their stories to create an experience that is authentic and results in images that we are both truly in love with. If there’s anything to know about my brand, it’s that I am a huge sucker for love stories and want to be able to emanate the uniqueness and genuine connection of your love story in your images!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative, especially in this industry/medium is knowing that this is art that my clients will cherish forever. Life’s milestones that I get to capture are always big ones- from wedding days to senior sessions they all have some story to tell and I think it’s important that they are captured authentically for clients to appreciate for years to come! These big, special moments typically only happen once in our lifetimes.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are so many resources that I think are very overlooked in the photography industry. One that I wish I invested in sooner is the Unscripted Posing App. Most photographers use this platform to share or look for inspiration photos for upcoming sessions, but this has become my go-to platform for organizing all of my sessions and the details that go into them- contracts, invoices, questionnaires, notes, client contact info- it’s all in one spot which has made my life tremendously easier! Even if you are not using Unscripted specifically, it’s SO important to be using some sort of client management tool as a photographer to keep all of your ducks in a row! I wish I would have started using one a long time ago.
