Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Richardson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taylor , appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always loved to sing. I started in my church choir as a kid so I developed an ear for music early. But I never took it “serious”. My family and friends would always put me on the spot to sing happy birthdays and random feel “good songs”. It wasn’t until I was 26 years old and in my first year of living in Dallas that I actually felt I was good enough to record. I met a guy who heard me sing and he said, “you need to be in a studio singing, now!” That same guy ended up producing my very first single “chill vibes” which I wrote on a random studio night! I got so much love from that single! “It’s about time!” And the “girl, you better sing”, “keep going!” That really solidified my decision to take it seriously. People were listening. And asking for more. I’m like, y’all really Vibing with me for real! Once I realized not only could I sing, but I can write a story with my words musically and paint a clear picture to my listeners, I invested in myself and said let’s do it!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
A little bit about me is that I’m from Youngstown Ohio and I have an amazing 9 year old son who I encourage to fall in love with your craft and work on perfecting that. I am a true Cancer! Being creative came easy to me. I would have ideas that would come to me out of no where and some ideas were inspired. I would write songs based off what the people around me were going through and find a way to paint that picture with my words that anyone listening could understand and place themselves right there in the moment. What sets me apart from the others is that I don’t try to trend. I make music that feels good to me. I use it as therapy and there are so many times I’ve just gotten lost in the moment of creation. I think now, a lot of music starts to sound the same and there’s so many talented people with unique and distinct voices. I happen to be one of them. I want my fans to know that when they listen to my music , you’re going to get the real! Not a façade . I talk about the good , bad, highs, lows, ins and outs of love and life!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to actually hear/watch your growth. I’m able to watch my words lyrically grow. I’m able to hear the difference in my voice from the first time I started recording in my homeboys living room to finding my confidence and getting to let it all out in the big studios. I’m my biggest critic so when I play my raw vocals back , I’m able to talk to myself and say “Taylor you can do that better,” or “That’s off, let me change my cadence” etc. I also get to reflect on songs I wrote and where my mind/heart was at that point in time.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Repost, share, tag, and listen! social media has become so powerful! It’s free and it the best way to share your music with other people! And the best part is, it’s free! Also, if your local artist has a show, coming out to see them means more than you’ll ever know.
