We recently connected with TAYLOR PRATT and have shared our conversation below.
TAYLOR, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning more about this hobby is what sparked my interest to create my business. I watched numerous YouTube tutorials to teach myself the ways of photography. I learned that most of my learning came from experience. With what I know now, if I could have done anything to speed up my learning process, it would have been to shadow more photographers and learn from them . The most essential skills I have learned are ; understanding lighting in images, and shooting in manual mode. During my learning process, I faced many obstacles. One of them being that there were already a lot of successful photographers in my town. This made me work harder to be different and offer new things.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up, I always had a camera in my hand. Whether it was my ip0d touch, my moms digital camera , or the camera off of my Nintendo DS. I never knew that people could take photos for a living until I had my high school senior pictures taken. I asked my photographer a million questions about her business. Hearing about her successes really caught my attention and encouraged me to learn more. Today, I now photograph weddings, engagements, couples, families and more. It was not easy building my clientele at first, but once I learned how to be different in a saturated market, I started to see a rise in my clients and following. I discovered my ‘bright and airy’ editing style and saw a huge change in my audience. I am most proud of how far I have come since 2020. I started out taking photos in my backyard, and now I am photographing 8 hour long weddings. I seriously have the coolest job ever and I’m so lucky to get to work with such sweet and amazing people.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for building my clientele has definitely been through social media. Planning my post and posting at least 3 times a week has really helped. In the beginning, I did several giveaways that required people to like, share and follow my page. This helped me grow a following on my social media platforms. This is the best advice for starting a business in 2023.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of this job is capturing cherishable moments. Photography is a way of holding onto a memory forever and I love having the opportunity of doing that for others. I love seeing my clients face light up when I show them their photos.
